Since at least 2,000 BC mankind has known of ophthalmic cataracts. Throughout history cataracts were often treated using an excruciatingly painful technique, the results of which were sometimes fatal and often resulted in even poorer sight. Historically cataracts were removed using a procedure called couching. This unsatisfactory treatment was performed by inserting a 'pencil like' object into the front of the eye, with the object of displacing the cloudy natural lens.
