Portraits & Figures. I recently completed a new drawing entitled “Renewal.” It was completed in charcoal, pastel and white chalk. I wanted this piece to touch on the conflict of transition. The young woman is caught between two seasons. She is bundled in a winter coat and clouds loom behind her. But she is also adorned with a full blooming rose symbolizing a promise of hope and a new beginning. In the meantime, I thought I would share some of my tools including some thoughts on how I rendered this work.

I am blogging bout things all the time. dive in! Once Upon a Time…. I know, I know I haven’t posted in 5 months. Sorry. I have lots of material though so let’s dive in. Last year I did a post on my love for chalk pastels, that can be found here. This year I was challenged to draw a character from a pop culture film very very big with chalk pastels. The end result is a project I happen to be quite proud of. To see more progress pictures you can look at my Instagram. Click to print (Opens in new window).

January 10, 2015. The first day of school is the day I started my first official drawing project. My absolutely amazing art teacher saw no point in wasting time handing out papers to sign or going over a syllabus. He just told us what our first project would be and to get started. At this point I had used pencil for the bulb and watercolor for the baby and then chalk for highlights and the rest of the baby. Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window). January 10, 2015. I think this has spurred a new series of drawings involving candles… we’ll see. I wanted to use the symbols for the factions in my design. So I broke out the Prismacolors and started drawing. It turned out pretty sweet. Please excuse the terrible picture, but I only had time to snap a quick picture before I had to turn it in. Okay I know I know it’s been forever. I have been INCREDIBLY busy. I have never been so busy in my entire life. The only reason I have time to write this post is because I finished a commission faster than I thought I would and I have some time to kill before I have to deliver it. Okay So I just got back from 5 weeks in Utah, consisting of both a 2 week mission trip and 2 weeks studying under William Whitaker. I will probably do a new and improved one here very soon. Encaustic… What’s That? January 10, 2015. 2015…. I become an adult in 2015… That’s not right. I can barely make toast, and I’m supposed to be an adult? I don’t even know how to take out a loan! Don’t you go to a bank or something…? Well, I can learn that in the 11 months I have left. Gosh, I have 11 months left of childhood. That’s terrifying. It seems like yesterday that I was just chillin on the couch, watching Veggie Tales… Wait, that was yesterday. They are little tins filled with colored beeswax.

January 10, 2015. There comes a point in an artist’s life when you just get stuck. Whether it’s a lack of inspiration, a need to improve, or a readiness to take the next step. This when it’s time for… A Bargue drawing. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, I would suggest going here. Basically Charles Bargue was an artistic mastermind who lived during the 19th century. You can also learn more about him on my favoritest blog by my favoritest artist, Meghan N. Chalk never grows old. May 10, 2015. 8211; for sale. Just take a second to look at that ear, that’s a pretty awesome ear! Awkward silence enter here because of my obsession over the ear) The technique used for this I love, next time I just need to take my time and make sure the drawing part is perfect. Here is the artist that inspired me. The artist is John Smolko, you can check out his art here. I basically did cross-hatching with chalk. 8211; for sale. Join 2 other subscribers. Once Upon a Time….

Writer’s block or Nah? January 10, 2015. I don’t think I have writer’s block, just a lack of time. Or energy. Or both. I know I don’t have a job, but I do have school… and tennis… and church. That’s still not a good excuse is it. So in the meantime I’ve been working on a drawing that I started last year. I thought it’d be a good project, not easy, but it wouldn’t take as long as a bargue drawing. I found this beautiful photograph by Ansel Adams. I’m maybe 1/4s of the way done.
