North Hill Marsh – Dogs? 8211; October 21. This is one of the few sanctuaries that is jointly managed, in this case with the Duxbury Conservation Commission. It is difficult to tell when you are on Mass Audubon property or town property. As a result, I saw almost as many dogs as people, though not many of either. Eagle Lake – high canopy hideout – September 27. I woke up this morning faced by several chores that I had been putting off for some time. So, I did the only sensible thing and set out to bird a Mass Audubon sanctuary, Eagle Lake. The kiosk touting the high canopy feeding of colorful species didn’t give me any confidence that I was actually going to see any of them, especially against the bright, gray sky. Nevertheless, it was hard to feel anything but cheerful on such a beautiful early autumn morning.

Lake Wompanoag – Silent Autumn – October 18. Having just finished Souder’s biography of Rachel Carson, I am acutely aware of the lack of bird song in the fall. I didn’t spot many birds today, but I am sure that there were others silently making their way towards the Gulf of Mexico. The fall colors (almost) made up for the paucity of birds. Not only was there a group of Eastern Bluebirds, but a Hermit Thrush lurked in the bushes along the edge. A lovely fall day, with a few birds, too. November 7, 2013.

When it comes time to pick a B&B for that (romantic/family visit/sightseeing adventure/all of the above), there are several things that come immediately to mind and which are used as selection criteria. The first is undoubtedly location (is the darn thing anywhere near where I want to be? Places I want to see? Wouldn’t it be better to simply stay at a 5 star Hotel?
