River Sailing

Sunday, 4 September 2011. Honfleur to Le Havre. The end of the road! It was blowing hard the next morning, and fatally, we decided to go anyway. The lock was windy and turbulent and once we’d got tied up the lock master shouted at us to move forward as there were other ships coming in, so we had to untie and move forward – a very bad move. Two big ships came in and tied up opposite us (so we needn’t have moved forward). When the gates opened, all hell broke loose. We changed the filters and bled the syst...

River Sailing: June 2011

http://www.riversailing.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, 30 June 2011. The Saône – Lyon to Mâcon. Lyon is extremely nice and we had a good time here. After our officially permitted 4 days in the marina (though we could have stayed longer) we prepared to leave, doing a bit of shopping at the Lidl nearby. We left after lunch, saying hello to Harry and Denny ( Malua. Who arrived as we were about to go, and started up the Saône River, weaving slowly through the city of Lyon, which is very big. Go – I said to Mike. Life jackets are obligatory in the locks...

River Sailing: July 2011

http://www.riversailing.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 28 July 2011. As agreed with the vnf, we cast off at 11 am today after a run to the supermarket for provisions. Our first lock was a straightforward remote operated one, but at the second we were met by a cute young woman with a blonde pony tail who escorted us, shooting along the tow path on a motor bike for the rest of the day, opening and closing the locks for us as we went, including one weird bridge that had to be physically swung sideways. And it was made worse for me by the fact that I d...

River Sailing: Rouen to Honfleur

http://www.riversailing.blogspot.com/2011/09/rouen-to-honfleur.html

Sunday, 4 September 2011. Slaves to the tide. We’d never really given any thought to the city of Rouen, but discovered that it is very old (actually mediaeval) and amazingly beautiful. We wished we could spend more time here but found ourselves slaves to the tide. It is recommended that the trip from Rouen to the sea (Le Havre or Honfleur) should be taken in one day and yachts are prohibited from travelling during darkness. 8217;s mast head. Eric, our lovely marina manager lent me a pressure washer and I...

River Sailing: April 2011

http://www.riversailing.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 18 April 2011. We have spent the last few days working inside the boat – yesterday Mike spent all day fully servicing the electric bilge pump and filters and cleaning the bilge. We discovered a pipe in the engine that needs welding and the welder can only come next week! However, he was right and we are going to need the full two months. As it is Spring there are lots of people about working on their boats and all the service companies are very busy. We listen to French radio and I try to follow ...

The Slow Track to Everywhere: France - The Last Post

The Slow Track to Everywhere. The story of seven fabulous years sailing around the world in Forever, our thirty five foot sailing yacht. Friday, 18 February 2011. France - The Last Post. Champagne, sparklers and new dreams. After one day at anchor out in the bay, we moved to the Navy Service Marina, lifted. In some places the swarms of mosquitoes were horrendous, but there were some great beaches a cycle ride away, thankfully without mozzies. Walking the dog with Heiner and Pirkko. We bought a car and tr...

River Sailor

The continuing saga of an independent author/publisher navigating the twisting course toward literary success. Tuesday, January 28, 2014. For several days now we have been anticipating a major winter storm here in eastern NC and it appears we have gotten one, only not the one we thought we'd get. Several millimeters of icy coating on the roads, driveways, and lawns. Feeling rather certain we would at least have a second Optional Teacher Workday. The other benefit of staying home will be, I hope, that I c...
