How to make green tomato relish. First I started with about 12 pounds of green tomatoes, about 4-5 pounds of onions, assorted green and red peppers. Then I ground the the tomatoes and peppers. I used a hand-crank food/meat grinder with a coarse setting (shown below). Then, I used my grandfather's kraut shredder to thinly slice the onions (outdoors, with a good wind to my back). The sliced onions were then put through the grinder, too.
