A reappraisal of NDCP2. Inspired by a thread. I downloaded NewDoom Community Project II. Again to remind myself which levels were worth playing and which were "travesties". In summary, there are quite a few levels worth playing. Also, those I put in the final category have their fair share of fans, even if I found them odious. It takes all sorts. I Give Up On Trying to Map 1. A sequence of tiny rooms with a lot of detail. Nukage base theme. Quite cramped, feels like a 1024 map, although it is not. I always like the "fight your way to a key, fight your way back through repopulated areas" mapping trope, but it is a bit too. Small, and too. That distinct style of nineties Doom 2 mapping: a sequence of rooms and areas, each in a different theme, chosen apparently at random. For example beyond the red door you have green bricks and blood then computer tech and superheated water. I did like the open courtyard with the overlooking windows and towers. Three maps: E1M1 is a circular arena with a dozen or two monsters, including all the Doom bosses. E1M8 is Doom's E1M8 modified in the same way that Doom's E3M1 became Doom's E3M9. Only joking. ...

Is everyone ready for another "mini-epoch" later? Seven maps with oldschool-ish texturing, decent layouts, a lot of monsters, and a paucity of ammunition. The whole thing is given an otherworldly atmosphere by the addition of a palette that smokily tints shades of dark grey with blue. I'm not really a fan of replacement palettes. On the other hand, the deep blue sky texture is very nice.

Derelict (version 1.1). A wad with its own webpage. You don't see these very often. It's how I found it (via reverse image search of the archvile screenshot). There are some "cute" moments as with all attempts-at-realism maps, although I only got most of them because the author's site lampshades them. Usually this kind of thing just flies over my head. There's a chainsaw, just pick it up and carry on. I don't think "hmm, why is there a chainsaw in a hospital?

Reasons for going 32 bits per pixel. Being able to specify automap colours exactly as RGB triples instead of palette indices. PWADs with replacement PLAYPAL lumps can no longer make your automap unreadable. Seeing how the water flats in Epic2 quickly degrade from light blue gradients to grey with sharp, dark blue lines under low light conditions - this is best observed at the start of map28. I hope to be able to start playing maps again soon.

The map itself is fairly disjoint with separate rooms to fight for each key. The monsters are numerous but so are the rockets (the only type of weapon you get). Lots of imps, revenants through a window, a room of cacodemons, more revenats, hellknights, and a finale involved even more revenants and a cyberdemon.

This is a. well, it's not really anything in particular, there's elements of temple, wood house, rock canyon, water, but really it's just a monster arena, a map designed with gameplay first. It is also very hard, although skill 2 is quite manageable. It is quite top-heavy (on skill 2) - once you clear out the imp trap you can retreat to the wood house there (the defensible location as I referred to it mentally) and fight things as they float in.
