Support Road to Care. Treating patients in Nairobi, Kenya. On May 5, 2016. In Road To Care. On April 8th, 2016 the sole cobalt unit in Uganda broke down permanently. Installing the new radiotherapy unit will take many months. When I heard this news, I could not sleep. I was troubled by the thought of a 40 year old cervical cancer patient with a 70% chance of being cured not receiving chemoradiation because the world stood by and did nothing. The majority of these women present with advanced disease, however, with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy, 50% of these cancers can be cured. Without treatment, the cancer causes pain, bleeding, incontinence, and eventually death.
