Robert Vaughan

Sunday, June 1, 2014. Malin Head and Corncrakes. A few field sketches and a painting I started since returning. After a few hours sleeping and preening, he casually crossed the track we were parked on and began singing in a walled garden of a ruined building. The voice was amplified and I'm sure it was enough to keep all the neighbouring birds at bay! One of the last views of the cottage male, singing away only a matter of feet from the car. Sunday, May 18, 2014. Some paintings and pics. I had over 40 cr...

Robert Vaughan: September 2013

http://www.robertvaug.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 30, 2013. Was out for the first time in a while over the weekend and it wasn't too bad! Found 2 lesser whitethroats and a melodious warbler on Cahore point. Plenty of crests and a few other migs about. A leucistic starling just south of the point could cause confusion if not seen well. This stonechat was one of several that showed a largely pale plain rump, could easily be of continental origin? Either of the following would do nicely as well! Sunday, September 15, 2013. I was in north ...

Robert Vaughan: Some recent pics

http://www.robertvaug.blogspot.com/2014/05/some-recent-pics.html

Friday, May 16, 2014. This bumblebee was found by a friend on the patch a few weeks back, we had spent all day friday in the area and again on monday when it was found. A little galling to think we missed some species of shrike, a family that is pretty scarce in Ireland and one I could never tire of seeing! The wings didn't look in the best condition and might explain why he hadn't moved far. I left a friend photographing it and again, it ended up in the water after whirring the wings!

Robert Vaughan: October 2013

http://www.robertvaug.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 24, 2013. Dusky warbler, I'm having it! Dusky warbler from Rudong in May 2013. The head is a little blurred but the well defined super is still obvious. It is not a feature mentioned in any field guides I have, but is in the advanced bird id handbook. Its good enough for me and I'm having it! Chiffchaff from Tory Island, 2012, the diffuse super extending over the bill. Raddes warbler, Beidehe 2010, just like the chiff, diffuse super continues over the bill. Monday, October 14, 2013.

Robert Vaughan: Tory Island

http://www.robertvaug.blogspot.com/2014/05/tory-island.html

Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Grasshopper warbler, Horn head. I was in Donegal for the long weekend and it was a little cold, wet and miserable. Quite a few migrants around, plenty of wheatear, whimbrel, white wags and 4 cuckoos singing from Muckish to Maharoarty.I had great views of atleast 4 singing grasshopper warblers on the loop around Horn head, one bird showing incredibly well, singing from a rough patch in a front garden! Great northern divers were on the move, with several in most bays and harbours alon...

Robert Vaughan: January 2014

http://www.robertvaug.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 24, 2014. I travelled upto Lough Fea in Co. Tyrone yesterday to look for the pacific diver found recently. First to arrive, we enjoyed fantastic views early on before it became a little distant as more birders arrived. Later in the morning it was showing really well again on the western shore line with the strong sun behind it. A few illustrations of the bird today using photos and sketches. Finished the day off at Giles' quay near Dundalk with 16 twite showing down to a few feet for over...
