A good friend of mine lives in Quin, County Clare. She is establishing a horse stud there. In addition to the almost 20 horses on the land, are the clan of barn cats, the two almost-indoor cats, two great danes, a black lab, and ruling the roost, a Jack Russell named Lucy. The sheep she keeps on the land improve the pasture. On this morning they were especially vigilant, because the day before, the hired hand’s dog had done a bit of sheep chasing.

An October dawn at the Regulating Reservoir a few miles outside of Helena, Montana. Lots of ducks, and a Great Blue Heron rookery in spring, some of whose nests are commandeered by Canadian geese. Is a bird-watching paradise. Hundreds of thousands of snow geese and tundra swans pass through here each year around the Spring Equinox.
Kayaking and whale watching in Baja | Robin Marlowe

15 years after taking a trip there with my mother a few months before she died, my uncle took us on a trip to Baja to celebrate his 75th birthday. We camped at Boca de Soledad and took day trips in pangas to see the mother-and-calf gray whale pairs. Boats are not permitted to chase the whales, but may approach if the whales do not move off. Some of the calves were curious about the boats and the people in them, and sometimes their mothers would allow them to indulge that curiosity.
skateboarders at Wellington City Centre | Robin Marlowe

Wellington City Centre is a beautiful public space, bounded on one side by the reflective curving wall of the city library. There is an art gallery, and a spacious brick plaza for public events. In downtown Wellington in January of 2014, I came across two boys with skateboards tucked under their arms. I asked them if they would come skateboard at this particular spot in the city center for me, and they did.
