The most important element in my work is the audience, because the work is set in locations where it is forced upon the spectator. It is their reaction that completes the work, which would not be a success if the viewer did not feel imposed upon and uncomfortable. My practice is inspired by Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection, specifically through reading her book The Powers of Horror. I have found further influence in the writing of Mary Douglas, particularly in Purity and Danger. Ours is indeed an age...

How soon is now? I went to the opening of one of the second year shows on May 1st. This show was named How soon is now? The exhibition was set in a coffee warehouse, which I felt was the perfect location for the work that was shown. What I alos liked about the show, was that the catalogue represented the exhibition perfectly, since it connected the work with the location, as the catalogue appeared to have been created from the bags that held the coffee. The Works above are all by artist Emma Doughty.
