Another Sunday afternoon in Limonad, another fanfare. Parade. This time, the celebration was for fête des mères. Mother's day - which is a big event in Haiti. A few photos taken while wandering ( flannen. Ing) around Limonad on Good Friday evening. Paulon, Isabel and Shayna in the yard outside their house. The pile of tyres they are sitting on is actually the top of the family's well. Dominoes. The guy on the right has clothes pegs clipped to his face as a penalty: each game you lose results in one peg on the face. Karate practice, on a rooftop at dusk. Or perhaps he is working illegally in the Dominican Republic, sending a little money home when he has the chance. Coming across the remains of a baroque palace in the Haitian countryside is a little surprising, but here it is. This is Sans Souci, the palace of King Henri Christophe, a slave boy who rose to become a general and then ruler of northern Haiti. Even more impressive than Sans Souci, though, is the Citadelle.
