Domestic Dilettante: June 2011
http://domesticdilettante.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Jun 30, 2011. Moving into an existing house means inheriting more than a floorplan, paint and carpet colors. What happens when the last resident was a gardener and you inherit their plants and planting schemes? If you're not a gardener, you probably don't give the green stuff much thought - it either gets ignored until it turns into brown stuff, or it gets mulched or mowed down. What color will it bloom? Is it situated properly for its sun/shade and moisture requirements? In the back yard, a few hostas a...

Every year for four years, a group of men and women from Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee mark their calendars for one Saturday in April, and agree to meet up at Rita Randolph's greenhouses. In Jackson, Tennessee. We do our best to clean out her inventory (don't worry - she's got plenty more where that came from.we think! You may be wondering, WHY? Is it that special? Domestic Dilettante: My Mantels
http://domesticdilettante.blogspot.com/p/my-mantels.html
Years ago, before we had a home with a fireplace, I dreamed of having a beautifully decorated mantel, and I imagined it would be fun to keep it updated and tasteful - never dusty, out of scale, or (horrors) boring. Like many things in life, reality is different from the vision. Since I'm always trolling for pictures of mantels and looking for fresh inspiration, I thought I'd create a little gallery of photos here - to inspire others with similar architectural challenges, offer some hope (or consolation!

Domestic Dilettante: October 2011
http://domesticdilettante.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Oct 31, 2011. Day of rest, week 8: no treats. Today is my least-favorite holiday. Last year, I gave an explanation as to why I don't do Halloween anymore. And I realize that makes me a bit of an oddity among my friends. (But so does my Sunday-day-of-rest thing, so I'm 2 for 2! As a non-Catholic, I just can't celebrate Halloween as "All Hallow's Eve." If I don't celebrate All Saints Day, it would be disingenuous to claim to celebrate its eve. I avoid this holiday? While I know everyone won't jump on this ...

Domestic Dilettante: July 2011
http://domesticdilettante.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Jul 30, 2011. A Bounty of Figs. What does any of that have to do with real figs? Why nothing, of course. But I did have a bounty of them drop into my lap this week. Despite my canning ambiguity. Yesterday morning I started with this - about 3 quarts of figs, washed and stemmed. It's a miracle there were any left after I started nibbling on them. Fig preserves; they're like sunshine in a jar. How many kettles does it take to can? Is it worth it? Other posts about canning foods. Jul 29, 2011. And surprisin...

Domestic Dilettante: November 2011
http://domesticdilettante.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Nov 30, 2011. Recipe of the Week: Cinnamon "Gingerbread" Ornaments. December's recipes will focus on holiday foods, but to kick things off, I'll start with one of my all-time favorite crafts: cinnamon dough for "gingerbread" men and women. This recipe is quick, easy and the results will smell good for years to come - I've had my ornaments for at least five or six years and they still exude the scent of cinnamon when I open their storage tin each year. Cinnamon dough for "gingerbread" ornaments. Line a co...
