Peeling away the layers. Bellyflops vs Swan Dives: Splash over Depth. In a piece published in The New York Times titled “Growing Older with Madonna”, Jancee Dunn. I remember that attitude from when I was 19, but then I grew up. The article asks a probing question about Madonna as an artist: “Yes, she is constantly reinventing herself, but is she evolving? The third, a Frank Bruni op-ed. Reinvention instead of evolution; generosity instead of justice; celebrity instead of authority, personality instead of...

Peeling away the layers. The world has been abnormal for so long that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to live in a peaceful and reasonable climate. If there is to be any peace or reason, we have to create it in our own hearts and homes. — Madeleine L’Engle. A Swiftly Tilting Planet. I don’t remember when I first read. A Swiftly Tilting Planet. As with so many of the books that have stayed with me, what I can. I’ve watched the news throughout this political season with interest and horror. All my...Madelei...

Peeling away the layers. Notes from the Middle Ground. 8220;An optimist stays up until midnight to see a new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” — Bill Vaughan. I’m torn: The optimist in me wants to take an inspirational look ahead, to set a positive tone for the new year. The pessimist in me wants to review the past twelve months, enumerating and wallowing in its difficulties. One approach seems disingenuous, the other disenchanting. Now that I think about it, that may be th...

Musings of a restless spirit. Saturday, March 24, 2007. Since I've Been Gone. Here's some advice. Don't let your friends talk you into drinking "a lot" (I use this term loosely) before flying on an airplane. Or, more to the point, don't have beer and brownies for breakfast, beer and pancakes for brunch, beer and bacon for lunch, and then Burger King for lupper (my family's word for the early evening time between lunch and supper). It doesn't make for happy travels. Posted by Nicole VZ at 6:47 PM. This pl...

Musings of a restless spirit. Saturday, October 28, 2006. Sure of All I Hope For. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1. The past few days have made me incredibly alive to the certainty of all that I cannot see. We also add beauty to the story around us and, whether we realize it or not, aid to usher in the kingdom here on earth. Ate some extremely fancy chocolate, and headed back to O-town. I was home about ten minutes before meeting friends to trav...

Peeling away the layers. Last week I stole my neighbor’s Sunday paper. You should know this: it was Thursday afternoon. The paper had been there, untouched, for days. In the movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit , the animated bombshell, Jessica Rabbit, famously declares, I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way. I, on the other hand, am neither bad nor was I drawn that way. Early on, there was the possibility of badness. Then, sometime in my mid-40s it hit me. I wasn’t bad, but my life was. Alright, that may be an...
