This is me collecting water samples for a stream tracer study while I was at Temple University all the way back in 2000. My professional and academic experience give me a uniquely balanced perspective from engineering and fluvial geomorphology. My work is at the nexus of engineering that requires stasis and ecological restoration that requires dynamism. In all of my work I strive for quantifying processes that we affect on rivers and streams and the effort needed to restore or rehabilitate them.

Why Restore Salmon Habitat? Once North American rivers had abundant runs of anadromous fish but due to land use changes, hydropower, and competing water uses many are threatened. Salmonids are vital to society culturally and economically but they are also ecological backbones of many Western Unites States rivers because they essentially take nutrients and energy from the ocean and bring it into riverine and riparian environments on land. This is a photo of 3 transverse and diagonal bars that are nested within a larger riffle that was constructed as part of a 2 mile river restoration project on the Merced River, California for salmonid habitat. In the applied context, my research is concerned with how we can assess, rehabilitate, and restore river systems at a variety of scales for aquatic organisms.
