Max's shop of horrors. About me and my blog. Warning: imagination testing site. Enter at own risk. Veterans of the Spectrum. I have it on good authority that prior to my birth, planet Earth was covered in salt mines, where the entire population worked 25 hours a day, 8 days a week. And they had to crawl to work because legs hadn’t been invented yet. But without any hint of snarkiness, I whole heartedly doff my cap to those people on the spectrum who grew up before autism was a widely recognized condition.

Max's shop of horrors. About me and my blog. Warning: imagination testing site. Enter at own risk. 4 years clean of self harm. If the title wasn’t warning enough, let me emphasize right now that this will not be a G-rated article. If the topic of self-harm upsets you, please stop reading now. This went on for about a year, unbeknownst to all but a handful of my closest friends and family. But the worst consequences weren’t physical; I was nearly kicked out of my university accommodation, which would have...

Being a writer is a lot like being an actor. You have to get inside the heads of your characters, figure out how they think, what they’re feeling, and why. There’s just one little problem; understanding how people besides myself think and feel is like open heart Klingon rocket surgery to me. August 18, 2015. Let’s speak hypothet...

Any of them bother you? If so, I have news for you. You are… wait for it… human. People like patterns. We like symmetry, and consistency. We like to put our pencils in the order of the rainbow, and avoid stepping on the cracks in the pavement. That’s not OCD. You know what the funny thing is? May 19, 2015. Reblogg...

Max's shop of horrors. About me and my blog. Warning: imagination testing site. Enter at own risk. Month: June, 2015. June 25, 2015. There are some things you should never, ever do. These include putting metal in the microwave, sneaking up on a grizzly bear and slapping its bum, and giving someone on the autism spectrum vague instructions. It’s too often assumed that we are “slow” or “stupid” when what seems like simple instructions leave us befuddled. 8221; Sounds straightforward enough, right? Likewise...

Max's shop of horrors. About me and my blog. Warning: imagination testing site. Enter at own risk. The Technical Savant Myth. Oh Rainman, you have a lot to answer for! Now, I don’t mean to devalue those who do have these skills; I know people with autism who can calculate immense numbers, or who can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than forty seconds, and that’s pretty freaking awesome. When I look a lot of the programs out there which aim to find employment for people on the spectrum, these less “tech...

Oh that’s right, we’re gonna talk about the S-E-X word this week! Don’t be alarmed though, I won’t be going into Cosmo detail here. Heck, you can find racier stuff in Women’s Weekly. There may come a time when I try my hand at porn (sorry, couldn’t resist that one). And not on this blog.😉. I can’t speak for others with OCD, but for me the fears associ...
