The top of the hill. Last night, I ventured out into the winds of the first Polar Vortex of 2014 on a musical pilgrimage to the Temple of Dendur, the famous, transplanted Roman-Egyptian temple housed in the Sackler Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The onus of my journey was to hear the last New York performance of the mellifluous Hilliard Ensemble,. At Trinity Wall Street. Followed immediately by the New York premiere of Nico Muhly. At St Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. Floating blissfully across this...

Has been together for forty years, making their final farewell concert at London’s Wigmore Hall. Something of a momentous occasion. Though its members have changed over the years, this all-male vocal quartet have remained champions of both early music and works by living composers throughout their extensive performing career.

Voice & Instruments. Music & Dance. Conducting in Ives’s “Second Orchestral Set”. February 11, 2015. Tonight I will be a second conductor in a rare performance of Charles Ives’s Second Orchestral Set. By the University of York Chamber Orchestra and first conductor John Stringer. I will conduct in the third movement a “Distant Choir” instrumental group, playing at a slower tempo than the main orchestra: the Distant Choir is in 3, fitting within the bars of the main orchestra who play in 4. The work was no...
