http://rogerpacker.com/blog/low-payout-looms-on-kindle-unlimited-pay-per-page-system-as-amazon-reveals-count-details-and-nearly-2-billion-a-month-page-reads?share=twitter
September 2, 2016. Long reads to pay off in Kindle Unlimited pay-per-page system as Amazon reveals count details and nearly 2 billion a month page reads. Amazon has revealed the prospect of what looks like a low page payout rate to authors under the new pay-per-page Kindle Unlimited system that could see the royalty rate at $1 for every 173 ebook pages read. Both of the examples above would bring higher payouts than the recent flat-rate payouts under KU, which have been around $1.38 per borrow. H...The m...
Reading is the best medicine -
http://rogerpacker.com/blog/reading-is-the-best-medicine
September 2, 2016. Reading is the best medicine. Most authors know that a book can change your life (particularly if it’s yours and becomes a best-seller) and Fast Company writer Mike Grothaus has found that his personal experience of a life-changing book is backed by scientific research. I’m not doing anything else. 8216;I became more assertive with my bosses. I got back on the horse, so to speak, and applied to three more graduate schools. I attended three interviews and got accepted to all thr...Groth...

September 2, 2016. Roses are dead for Scribd after it dumps popular romance books that cost it too much. Ebook subscription service Scribd has dumped many romance and erotica novels from its line-up because they are so popular with readers that they cost the company too much. It’s been a bad week for authors with books on subscription services after details from Amazon revealed its new pay-per-page system for Kindle Unlimited is likely to offer a very low page-read payout. Scribd says: ‘We’ve grown...

September 2, 2016. Kindle Paperwhite adds higher resolution, Bookerly font and new layout engine. The new 300ppi Kindle Paperwhite displaying the Bookerly font. The new Kindle Paperwhite looks like a bit of a bargain with higher resolution and including Amazon’s new ‘typesetting’ engine and the new Bookerly font for just $119. In fact, the Paperwhite has stolen a march on the Voyage as Bookerly has been added to the font choice. You can customize the font size on a Kindle and Amazon says ‘over half...

http://rogerpacker.com/blog/no-book-required-the-new-world-of-assetless-ebook-pre-orders?share=twitter
September 2, 2016. No book required — the new world of ‘assetless’ ebook pre-orders. Ebook distributor Smashwords is now offering assetless pre-orders (no book or cover required) for indie authors and claims books launched as pre-orders in the last year earned over triple the amount made by books uploaded on day of release. Smashwords started pre-orders two years ago for iBooks, Barnes and Noble and Kobo, but less than 10% of books released through the firm over the last year were set up as pre-orders.

Lexi Revellian: Thirty years ago and thirty years ahead
http://lexirevellian.blogspot.com/2014/12/thirty-years-ago-and-thirty-years-ahead.html
Wednesday, 31 December 2014. Thirty years ago and thirty years ahead. Part of my work in progress is set thirty years ahead. Musing about the changes that might happen in the next three decades, it seems useful to consider what has changed since 1984. Things we thought okay in 1984 we don't think okay now. Smoking in bars, restaurants and other people's houses. Dog excrement on pavements - we didn't like it, but grudgingly accepted that to a dog, the whole of outdoors was a potential lavatory. Other poss...
Lexi Revellian: Harper Lee and the difficulties of writing
http://lexirevellian.blogspot.com/2014/07/harper-lee-and-difficulties-of-writing.html
Saturday, 26 July 2014. Harper Lee and the difficulties of writing. Harper Lee has been in the news lately. Regarding her opposition to Marja Mills' biography of her, recently published by Penguin. As we all know, Harper Lee only wrote one novel, To Kill a Mocking Bird. A modern classic, a book so excellent and popular that if any author is entitled to rest on her laurels and never write another word, that author is Harper Lee. Had a recent post. One of my favourite quotes is from Lynne Truss:. Friendly,...

Friday, 31 October 2014. Getting to keep 10% of everything you earn. This is a brief snippet from an old BBC sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour. 8220;You’ve forgotten something, mate. I’m your agent, remember? I got a contract with you.”. You’ve been holding that thing over my head for five years now, allowing me to keep 10% of everything that I earn.”. Audience laughter at the rapacity of Sid James and Hancock’s gullibility. Friday, October 31, 2014. 7 November 2014 at 09:41. 7 November 2014 at 10:11. One of t...

Thursday, 20 November 2014. Time travel via Google. The current work in progress is to do with time travel,. And in the course of the novel my characters will visit the same places at different eras. As usual, the setting is my part of London; even so, I sometimes check out a location virtually on Google Street View. London changes all the time, much faster than most places. And we are time travelling all the time. We just don't notice it. Thursday, November 20, 2014. 20 November 2014 at 17:01. 20 Novemb...

Sunday, 29 March 2015. Conflict - a pain in life, essential in fiction. Or why bad things need to happen to your characters, especially the nice ones. Romeo meets Juliet and they instantly fall for each other. After initial reservations, the Montagues and Capulets agree to the match. Romeo and Juliet get married and live happily ever after. You get my drift. Are you feeling restive yet? The hero and heroine must earn their happy ending. Sunday, March 29, 2015. 30 March 2015 at 20:12. Absolutely agree Lex...
