A ten-minute drive past the border takes you to the St Prohor Pčinjski Orthodox monastery, it being the real clincher behind our original detour. The monastic complex is beautifully arranged, comprised of the St Prohor Church and the magnificent konak. From left to right: Diogenes IV, St Prohor, King Milutin (click to enlarge). Incidentally, Diogenes’ own fate as an emperor turned out to be a sort of ro...

Posted on Thursday, December 26, 2013, under short story. For several weeks now when not teaching I have spent my time lying around either consciously dreaming or unconsciously waking and in both cases irresponsibly irritable to the last degree. And there was her, making herself busy, standing up and sitting down thousands of times, shuffling papers, checking files, typing, popping in behind the Operatory. How the hubby was unbelievably busy (he was to catch shinkansen. I followed her to the Operatory.

Posted on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, under joyce. Today K. and I come to a conclusion that dental floss is an amazing invention. She made this excellent Chinese soup with veggies and scallop, the latter of which has shredded itself during the cooking process, and many of the said shreds eventually found new home between my teeth. K. asks who invented dental floss. How the heck should I know? So I google it of course. Did you know that first dental floss goes as far back as early 19. Used the dental floss?

Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2013, under art. Living is like tearing through a museum. Not until later do you really start absorbing what you saw, thinking about it, looking it up in a book, and remembering - because you can't take it in all at once. The weather was absolutely gorgeous today – crisp, sunny, the air feather-light. At about 2 pm I decided to make my move. I got on a bike and cycled to downtown Kyoto. I had previously made a tentative plan to pay a visit to this. Links to this post. This b...

Aka ‘Will Our Heroes Succeed in Finding Their Friend Who Has Mysteriously Disappeared in Africa? 8217; (Ettore Scola, 1968). How this little gem of a movie ended up on the airbus movie list is beyond me, and boy am I glad that it did. Because it really is a gem of a commedia all’italiana. Links to this post. Back in the Day. Posted on Saturday, August 27, 2011, under the balkans. Back in the day they built scores of Socio-Realistic, khaki-grey, blocks in Belgrade. One such, dubbed televizor. For its windows the shape of a TV screen, stood out as an aesthetic curio. The four-storey block our family lived in was of yellow-grey tint, flanked by trees and us kids playing footy in communal parks. Links to this post. Ohara Fields, North Kyoto, September 2014. Posted on Monday, October 06, 2014, under kyoto. A Day in the Country. Plead the rice ears. On the golden fields of Oharu. A man with a determined face. Is showing us the ropes:. How to cut stalk with a hand sickle,. His own ink-marked with a kanji. A short woman who could be his mum. Is bundling the rice straw into sheaves,. And you know who is in charge here. And who you won’t be introduced to. Then you are on your own. You saw. Crickets buzzing in your ears.

Like a WW2 egg. Fried atop a tank. Summertime in Kinki –. Sunrays, winds, showers. Yet it is money talks:. Wind farms axed, panels. Sparse, river dams on hold. When the initiative balks. From last night's gig at Urban Guild, Kyoto. Links to this post. Man ray: a cactus. I am not an animal. Róisín Tierney.
