Life, Death and Fog: Book Notes – Trace Conger And The Arrival Of The Questionable Mr. Finn
http://lifedeathandfog.blogspot.com/2015/07/book-notes-trace-conger-and-arrival-of.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Book Notes – Trace Conger And The Arrival Of The Questionable Mr. Finn. By Trace Conger is a good read. What it did, in addition to providing the satisfaction of reading an interesting and innovative crime tale, is re-ignite in my mind two on-going debates in the publishing world. The first is independent publishing, the new and kinder word for self-publishing, which replaced the even worse sounding “vanity press.” The Shadow Broker. Well-written and edited, with a great cover.

Life, Death and Fog: Rant — Somehow I Know It’s My Doing
http://lifedeathandfog.blogspot.com/2013/06/rant-somehow-i-know-its-my-doing.html
Saturday, June 8, 2013. Rant — Somehow I Know It’s My Doing. It will soon become obvious that I need some sort of spiritual renewal — the sooner the better. On the other hand, I need to rant. I call it convergence. It’s when the coin always turns up tails. For example, I live on a hill. I can see many blocks in all directions. This may be the same person who is at the end of the long, empty aisle at the grocery where I have gone to pick up one essential item. The other day, in need of a couple of hours o...

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Film Pairing – Young, Clueless And In Over Their Heads. These are two fine movies though perhaps for different reasons. Bad Turn Worse. Is clever crime fiction. Common. There are problems. Well-acted by MacKenzie Davis. It is directed by the Hawkins. And released in 2013. In the case of murder...

Life, Death and Fog: Rant — Tales of The Home Invaders
http://lifedeathandfog.blogspot.com/2015/07/rant-tales-of-home-invaders.html
Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Rant — Tales of The Home Invaders. My 30-year old clock radio is by my bed. It is lit with large digital numbers that are very easy to read in the dark even when awakened, bleary-eyed at 4:43 am. When the call came, I was scared and angry, I hoped no one had died, that my building was not on fire, and I was not called to bail someone out of jail. Had to be something like that. The caller was male who spoke English with a thick accent. The phone shrieked again. Through the small ...

Life, Death and Fog: Book Notes — Banned in Guantanamo Bay, Texas Jails And In A Library Near You
http://lifedeathandfog.blogspot.com/2013/09/book-notes-banned-in-guantanamo-bay.html
Sunday, September 1, 2013. Book Notes — Banned in Guantanamo Bay, Texas Jails And In A Library Near You. Each year the American Library Association hosts “Banned Book Week,”. When they call upon the public to remember the U.S. has a history of trying to determine what we should be allowed to read. I remember as a kid turning the wire bookrack in Simpson’s Pharmacy, seeing those excitingly vulgar paperbacks with hot type banners: Banned in Boston. Very desirable that was. If they went ahead, the play migh...

Life, Death and Fog: Actors Of Distinct Character — His Name Is Mud
http://lifedeathandfog.blogspot.com/2013/10/actors-of-distinct-character-his-name.html
Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Actors Of Distinct Character — His Name Is Mud. I was not a fan of Matthew McConaughey. Weighing whether or not I was going to see a film he was in his presence would tip me against it. I’ve since changed my mind. As I think back on it, it might have been the character (sleazy, unctuous) he played regularly, combined with the fact that he played those characters so well that it made me squirm. I began to change my ways when they made a movie out of my favorite of Michael Connelly.

Thrilling New Detective Fiction

So you're a private detective? I didn't know they existed, except in books - or else they were greasy little men snooping around hotel corridors. Bacall to Bogart in The Big Sleep. A NOTE TO READERS.
