BibleBase Second Thoughts: June 2014

Friday, 27 June 2014. 8220;Its a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”. There is another famous quotation from the same book which declares "but if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.". Together the two quotations describe a brilliant propaganda strategy. Either remove the words altogether or, as an alternative, continue to use the word but redefine them. What does this have to do with us? Much, in every way. Let's remove some words, shall we? What can the righteous do?

Friday, 11 July 2014. Bring Here Thy Wounded Heart. Relics of the Salvation Army. In 2 foot high letters of gold it carried the words. HERE BRING THY. .WOUNDED HEART. Split into the two halves of the Penitent Form and consequently spread right across the width of the hall. A little lower, and in the centre of the text, in slightly smaller letters were two more golden words. It sat there through the whole (wonderful) wedding almost transfixed by the silent testimony of the days when God was expected to mo...

BibleBase Second Thoughts: January 2014
http://biblebasesecondthoughts.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 14 January 2014. The LORD thy God. The phrase is found in 264 verses and, according to my Bible Software, 196 of those verses are in the book of Deuteronomy. The exodus people had become God's people and the whole of Deuteronomy is based on the fact that this miracle has already taken place. Let me give you some more statistics. It was almost certainly pronounced more like. Has very little personal history for most Christians, so I'll stick to. In the old KJV you will find the name. Ex 20:7 ASV&...

BibleBase Second Thoughts: March 2013
http://biblebasesecondthoughts.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 27 March 2013. Because I have you in my heart. This is part of the secret of the ministry of Paul to the churches. Certainly he had a 'royal commission' but he had something else too; the love of God had been poured out in his heart by the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:8. The heading is taken from Paul's letter to 'the saints', the people of God, in Philippi. Php 1:6,7. There is a line from an old Graham Kendrick song that comes to mind. Where are the love tears that earned the right to speak".

Monday, 13 August 2012. Prayer. without wrath and reasoning. Paul shares his heart longings with Timothy. I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 1 Tim 2:8 NKJV. He prefaces this statement by showing us what he has in mind when he calls for such prayer;. To be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all. For there is one God an...

Monday, 30 July 2012. Our fascination with the Olympics is no new thing. The Games were part of the culture of the 1st century and they serve as a rich source of metaphors for several New Testament writers, especially Paul. We sometimes need to dig a little to spot some of the references but they give us a wonderful glimpse into the mind-set of early Christians. One word which is easily overlooked is the word sometimes translated as ‘strive’. And every man that striveth. Mind you, Paul was very clear how...
