Guide to the Roosevelt Dime Coin Series. Roosevelt Dimes were struck in proof format for nearly every year of the series. In general, these coins have lower mintages than their circulation counterparts, but since the coins were usually purchased by collectors or dealers, the survival rates are much higher and the coins remain readily available. For the years 1965 to 1967, no proof coins would be struck. For these years, special mint sets were produced, which contained coin with proof like qualities.

Guide to the Roosevelt Dime Coin Series. Between 1946 an 1964, the Roosevelt Dime was struck in a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. The coins had a standard weight of 2.50 grams (39 grains). During this time period, dimes were struck for circulation at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. However, the issue does represent a significant strike rarity as very few coins were struck and survive with Full Bands. For the series, the grading designation “Full Bands” is used to designate sharply struck coins which display full separation between the horizontal bands surrounding the fasces on the reverse of the coin.

1916-1945 Mercury Dime Coin Guide. History of the Mercury Dime. It is generally believed that Elsie Kachel Stevens, the wife of poet Wallace Stevens, was the model for Weinman’s portrait of Liberty. She and her husband were tenants of an apartment owned by Weinman. In 1913, he had prepared a bust of Elsie, with her hair pinned under a cap including wings to symbolize liberty of thought.
