Struggles to Understand and be Understood. Before I came to South Africa, I never considered what a privilege is it to understand the words spoken around me. More than ten months into my time in South Africa, my isiZulu is not even close to conversational. I do not understand the majority of what is spoken around me at church functions. Rooted in Life: January 2009

http://www.rootedinlife.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Am I a Jonah or a James? Below is a devotion that I prepared for my home church's annual meeting on 25 January. I was able to deliver it via Skype. Many thanks to all the people that made this connection possible. This reflection is based on Jonah 1:1-4 and Mark 1:16-20. Am I a Jonah or a James? Am I a runaway prophet or a disciple of Christ? Are we even listening for that call? Let me tie up some loose ends first,” or even, “Wait! I know that I fall painfully short. 8220;Where is everything? 8221; I was...

PACSA: an NGO in SA. As with any aspect of the development sector, immersing oneself in a NGO like PACSA requires. As working at an NGO means that one is inherently working on a deadline, the reader will have until the end of this reflection to memorize these:. AACC All Africa Council of Churches. CABSA Christian AIDS Bureau of South Africa. CCOH Churches Channels of Hope. SACC South Africa Council of Churches. UNAIDS United Nations Joint Program on HIV/AIDS. VAW violence against women. Rooted in Life: April 2009

Between Creation and Creator. Recently I spent four weeks with no functioning indoor plumbing. Due to an infrastructure malfunction, the water supply was almost non-existent to the house at which I’m staying.  . A tiny trickle came from the tap behind the house, which was to provide water for four people.  . It took about an hour to fill a five-gallon bucket, making the water supply extremely limited.  . Only small amounts could be used for simple activities like bathing, cooking, and laundry.  . When yo...

Where else would it be considered not unusual for your roommate to be icing down a typhoid vaccine in a Starbucks cup or your ultimate Frisbee team determined by whether you are serving in the Global North and the Global South? And where else would the Global South consistently buck historical trends by dominating the North? Where else do you refer to expecting the unexpected as the “mushrooms in your basement”? I was blessed to meet so many engaging people this week and to renew the acquaintances I.

http://www.rootedinlife.blogspot.com/2009/06/even-now-i-am-sending-you.html

Even now I am sending you. 8220;I thought you were going to say you were a missionary or something…”. I was shocked to be found out. Our conversation was ending, and I was surprised by this offhand comment. I had been chatting with a cashier in a grocery store. 8220;Where are you from? 8220;My accent gives me away doesn’t it? I’m from the US.”. 8220;Oh that’s cool. What are you doing here in South Africa? 8220;I’m a volunteer doing development work.”. I pray that it might be so. Subscribe to: Post Commen...

Thursday, May 14, 2009. Where has the time gone? Last night I made a cheesecake for some friends in the student housing part of the church. I am really enjoying being able to spend time with young adults and fellowship with them. And my cheesecake was delicious! The Italian volunteer, Cecile, made crepes. The young adult group that I am a part of knows how to eat! Thank you all for your support! Mary Mary Quite Contrary. Wednesday, May 6, 2009. History of the Congregation: Nuestro Salvador. Thursday, April 30, 2009. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God. In the sixth chapter of Matthew, he talks about not worrying ourselves with posesions nor. Our physical needs, but seeking first the Kingdom of God and he will provide us with the rest. Many of my worries faded with the warm welcomes I received. Wednesday, March 25, 2009. The fall weather is beautiful here. and hopefully this weekend will still be beach weather! I cannot believe my parents board the plane in a WEEK to come see me. I also cannot believe that I (along with my twin sister) will be turning 25 so soon. Dispatches from Around the Globe. Monday, March 9, 2009. It's the economy stupid. Or is it the stupid economy? In the midst of this economic downturn many of my church colleagues have two questions for me given my provenance and qualification: what do you think of President Barack Obama, and what do you think of this who economic situation? The next exploration and question to be asked is: is this the best solution? Can other solution work with equal efficacy and just as quickly? Without a more intricate...

http://maryrk45.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 19, 2008. As usual, more is happening than I can write in my blog. I still struggle with recognizing ALL of the blessings God has given this World. They appear so abundant in some places and seem so absent in others. But where one person sees an absence of material belongings, another can recognize an abundance of smiles and happiness. What have I been up to? We are working on getting things organized and on the computer. Thanks to my friend, Kayt, I got my Halloween candy and enjoyed...

Dad presenting Wilma with a shawl that the congregation in South Carolina (Lutheran Church by the Lake) prayed over the Sunday before. (Every stitch is a prayer, every hole is a hug.). Here we go!: Post from Daddy

http://maryrk45.blogspot.com/2009/04/post-from-daddy.html

Monday, April 13, 2009. On our taxi ride from the airport we learned of two great tragedies in Argentina. The death of Alfonzine, the first freely elected president after the dictatorship of Peron, was a great emotional loss for many in the country. There was a national day of mourning with a large state funeral. The other tragedy was the lost of the Argentine soccer team to Bolivia, 6-1. When it came time to preach I tried to keep the message simple and I pray that God used it to speak to the hearts of ...
