Dawn Raid | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2013/10/06/dawn-raid
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. October 6, 2013. We left Troytown campsite as the rising sun breached the top of St Agnes and were witness to the awakening of the islands’ population of shags, puffins and petrels. Our clockwise circuit of Annet and the Western Rocks took us to the very edge. Of the Isles. We shocked seals out of their early morning slumber and rode the surprisingly large cross swell back to St Anges in time for breakfast. Sunrise over St Agnes. Post-Glacial Sea ...

Paradise | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2009/07/01/paradise
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. July 1, 2009. I’ve finally dusted off the sea kayak; it’s not been out to play since paddling to Lundy back in September. Oh dear. But I feel that I’ve more than made up for it. I have discovered a little corner of home grown paradise. That’s right, I’ve been to the Isles of Scilly…. The bluest blue, north coast of St. Martins. Photo by Mark Rainsley. Is the root cause of Cornwall being a historically important mining location for tin (cassiterite...

Wailing of Pups | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2009/03/06/wailing-of-pups
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. March 6, 2009. If the paddle to and from Lundy. Wasn’t sufficient, we managed to summon up the energy to circumnavigate the island. It was well worth the effort…. Exploring the Lundy coastline. Photo by Mark Rainsley. Not the same as exfoliation joints. Whereby weathering causes the surface of the granite to peel off like layers of an onion. Posted in Bristol Channel. Laquo; The Granite Isle. Hey, learning stuff is fun. Lundy, again | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2013/10/15/lundy-again
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. October 15, 2013. Paddled to Lundy, again. I’ve written about this lovely granite isle before, here. However, Lundy isn’t just granite. One small area around landing beach and Rat Island contains the ‘country rock’. This was the existing rock that the granite magma forced its way into. You can see the Morte Slates Formation. When you land on the island and head up the track (to the pub! Saturday saw us paddling clockwise around the island with the...

The Granite Isle | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/the-granite-isle
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. March 2, 2009. After the dire summer last year we were finally blessed with a weekend of settled weather. It proved to be more than perfect for the 21 mile paddle from the North Devon coast to Lundy, and back. Lundy is primarily formed of granite. Blah blah blah. Not that exciting you say? Well you’d be wrong! Photo by Mark Rainsley. Was the Granite Isle worth the 4.5 hrs it took to get there? Granite Tors, Lundy. Photo by Mark Rainsley. 8230;] at...

On the Edge of the Atlantic | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/on-the-edge-of-the-atlantic
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. June 22, 2013. On the Edge of the Atlantic. Still a long way to go (the rocks on the left are 3.5km from the lighthouse). Strictly speaking, the (not very good) photo below is a diorite. St Martin’s granite. The workers who built Bishop Rock lighthouse. Had the daunting task of living upon Rosevear, another exposed lump, 3km east of Bishop. It is only slightly less lonely because it has several neighbours within the Western Rocks. Pointy | Kayaking on the Rocks
https://kayakingontherocks.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/pointy
Kayaking on the Rocks. Just another WordPress.com weblog. September 30, 2013. Bull Point, Morte Point, Baggy Point and just generally pointy rocks. That’s a lot of pointy. At this time, Britain was part of the super-continent Pangaea, located somewhere just south of the equator. It just happens that the cleavage around Morte Point is very steeply inclined and so erosion creates narrow gullies between the cliffs and the open ocean. These gullies are perfect rock-hopping territory for a keen sea kayake...
