Mika Rottenberg at Nottingham Contemporary. The installations that were created to view the video work in led to the viewer feeling like they were in another environment other than that of the gallery. The piece which most caught my attention was one whereby the viewer had to peer through a small circular hole in the gallery wall to view the video. Similar to the idea of the installations, it was easily forgotten that you were in a gallery context. Below are some images of the exhibition:.

Elements of everyday life are brought to the viewer’s attention via excessive written documentation. Video is the chosen media as it allows the process of the written documentation to be revealed. The writing is produced in a repetitive manner to accentuate the recurring nature of our daily actions and continuous use of everyday objects. The most important element in my work is the audience, because the work is set in locations where it is forced upon the spectator. It is their reaction that completes the work, which would not be a success if the viewer did not feel imposed upon and uncomfortable. My practice is inspired by Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection, specifically through reading her book The Powers of Horror. I have found further influence in the writing of Mary Douglas, particularly in Purity and Danger. Ours is indeed an age...
