Jane is the only student who I teach online (by skype) and she keeps on posting her ideas and reflections on many interesting topics. One of the them is reflection on our English classes. So, it’s great, I suppose! Jane, thanks for inspiration and God bless you in your striving for excellence in your learning process.

October 2, 2014. This post looks at a chapter entitled ‘Agency in the classroom’ written by Leo van Lier published in. Sociocultural theory and the teaching of second languages. At its core then, agency is, and here van Lier quotes Ahern, “the socioculturally mediated capacity to act” (p.163). How then do we define sociocultural mediation? Rather than something the learners. 1 involves initiative or self-regulation by the learner (or group). Van Lier advocates the analysis of many other traits evident in...

The six categories are:. Prescriptive, Informative and Confronting; all ‘authoritative’ modes of intervention. Authoritative as they are more the result of a hierarchical relationship, a top-down approach, where the observer has control of the procedure. In the results and discussion section, Yurekli states that, in line wit...

Translators may produce mistakes, they are human, too, after all. However, as I’ve shown in my earlier posts about mistranslations from China and the Netherlands, some are so outrageous that they do not only border on stupidity. For the sake of balance, and for those of you who understand some Hungarian, I must post this example. Enjoy and have a fabulous day. Although th...

Learning a language, it seems to me, is easiest when you know Sweet Fanny Adams. At this point in your career, everything is new and not a day goes by (. Starting in the top left hand corner and working her way methodically to the bottom right hand corner. Did I feel that she hampered my learning? No How could she?
