Life in Costa Rica. Friday, July 31, 2015. These heliconias are in bloom now all over the property. The large colorful protrusions hold rain water that many birds and insects feed from. I looked these up in the plant book and see they are called Wild Plantain. I'm not sure why that name was chosen. I see they are also referred to as False Bird-of-Paradise which seems a better match.
