Rachel on Ice 2012. Sea Ice Research from McMurdo Station. October 31, 2012. Today is yet another gorgeous sunny spring day in McMurdo, so we found no blown snow in our collection baskets when we went out to our sites this morning. Fortunately we did have some twice last week and we are also collecting lots of sea ice cores and surface snow for analysis. The following is a photo essay of our recent adventures. Blowing snow collection tower in light wind. Collecting snow from a basket. Profiling a snow pit.

Rachel on Ice 2012. Sea Ice Research from McMurdo Station. October 15, 2012. Windless Bight is an enormous ice plain, 27 kilometers northeast of Scott Base (Antarctica New Zealand) on the Ross Ice Shelf. Normally, it is a relatively windless area, and thus the site of an infrasound monitoring station that is part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty system (CTBT). It also hosts one of the automated weather stations. Our ride, a Pisten Bully. Out on the ice. 5 responses to “ Windless Bight. Octobe...

Rachel on Ice 2012. Sea Ice Research from McMurdo Station. October 31, 2012. Another lovely day and no snow blowing into our baskets. We walked around Chip though, to get samples and a feel for the snow distribution around the berg. Michael, a station firefighter and friend from Happy Camper, came with us. A block off of old Chip. How to feel very very small. Don’t wake sleeping seal! Out at sea →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:.

USNA Polar Science Program: MACARENA Day 6

MACARENA 2013; Measuring Arctic CArbon REsearch in Northern Alaska Deadhorse, AK. Friday, August 23, 2013. Today was probably the most interesting day we've had. It was our major "Boat Ops" day, and the plan was to take several full water samples of multiple rivers and lakes. And, of course, it had to be one of the colder rainier days of our trip. The team split up; one group went to recover samples from past sites, and my group was to execute Boat Ops. Posted by USNA PSP. United States Naval Academy.

MACARENA 2013; Measuring Arctic CArbon REsearch in Northern Alaska Deadhorse, AK. Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Today we were back on the road by 0900 and got to our first new site an hour later. Pretty long drive? Well let's just say that we had a minor encounter with North Slope security. Nothing serious, just to remind us of the possible wildlife encounters we may have and to be extra careful driving around these roads. Along the way, we ran into a few caribou! Posted by USNA PSP. MACARENA 2013; Measuring Arctic CArbon REsearch in Northern Alaska Deadhorse, AK. Sunday, March 24, 2013. NAICEX; The Frozen Leadership Laboratory Part 1. Greetings, LCDR Woods here, and after thawing out for 7 days, I am finally getting around to the 'wrap up' post from our Spring Break experiment up North in Barrow, AK. What an experience! Most of the trip was captured in the previous blog posts, so I will not cover every detail, just some of the many highlights. After a few practice days, we finally g...
