February 1 - 13, 1998. So I flew from Chiang Mai to Vientiane. The capital of Laos, on Lao Aviation. It was okay, except for the food. Vientiane isn't very exciting. Hot, dry and dusty. Decaying. Except for a lot of really nice restaurants, which are mostly empty. Almost had one collapse on me, as they dug up the street. Spent a couple of days wandering around. Saw a couple of temples, which weren't very interesting. One had a storage room full of Buddha bits (a great new breakfast cereal). We were sitti...

January 1 - 3, 1998. So I got to the airport in Auckland, all ready to fly to Bangkok, but the airline wouldn't let me fly there, because I didn't have a ticket out of Thailand. Technically Thailand requires this, but in practice they don't enforce it. I was planning on buying tickets in Bangkok, where it's cheaper. Or even going overland to Laos. So I went to Singapore Airlines. Changed my ticket to Bangkok to the next day, and hoped they wouldn't be such sticklers at the airport there.

May 22 - June 13, 1997. I checked the tour agents in Kathmandu for trips to Tibet, but they wanted outrageous prices. Plus they said I need a Tibet visa - that my China visa wasn't good enough - which I knew was bullshit. January 3 - February 1, 1998. I made it in to Thailand on my second attempt. The airline didn't ask about an onward ticket. When I arrived, Thai customs didn't ask about an onward ticket. The next morning I decided I could afford a better place, and got a spotlessly clean room at the 7 Holder Guesthouse for 120 B. We went to see the Bridge on the River Kwai.
