Row House Refuge: Mid-Century Furniture Knock-offs
http://www.rowhouserefuge.blogspot.com/2012/11/mid-century-furniture-knock-offs.html
Color Consult Cool Stuff. Sunday, November 4, 2012. The High and the Low. While I love good design, I also love a good deal. And having both. well, that makes my day. Take a look at these beautiful mid-century splurges and their knock-offs. Room and Board makes amazing furniture. While I appreciate their craftsmanship, this Eames Molded Plywood Chair. At $889 is a little out my price range. However, this Molded Plywood Chair. From Overstock.com at $142.19 is a little more my speed. Comes in at $179.99.

Color Consult Cool Stuff. Saturday, May 11, 2013. Create Impact, Start with the Rug. I have long been a fan of the cowhide rug. Whether it is printed with a zebra pattern,. Classic black and white,. Or a solid pale tan. I love them all! Cowhide rugs add an element of surprise to any room. They are great paired with a sisal or jute rug ( the bottom rug serves as the rug pad). They look terrific with traditional furnishings -. Especially those zebra printed ones. AND, they look great in modern rooms too.

Color Consult Cool Stuff. Sunday, March 30, 2014. Ceramic Painting - Part 2. Permanent Markers on Ceramics. With so many mass produced products, it is fun to create something unique. A while back, I did a post. About using permanent markers on ceramics to create one of a kind "painted dishes". It was a relatively simple project and the results were very rewarding. However, a number of people have contacted me, with the same question:. Is there anyway to erase if you make a mistake? Posted by jackie sink.

Row House Refuge: Home Bike Storage
http://www.rowhouserefuge.blogspot.com/2014/04/home-bike-storage.html
Color Consult Cool Stuff. Saturday, April 19, 2014. There are always trends in real estate - home saunas, wet bars, mud rooms. Some of these fads last the test of time, while others become obsolete. A trend, of late, is that more home buyers are looking for bike storage. While homes in the suburbs often have garages to store bicycles, those of us who live in urban areas are a bit more space challenged. However, ingenious bike storage is popping up everywhere! The Bike as a Home Accessory.

Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: November 2012
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 1, 2012. If youre squeamish about mice you can stop reading now. I am rather fond of them. And though I cant tell one from the other, we have several that romp around the house, most frequently around the kitchen, where they skitter across the counters when the lights are out and were immersed in something cultural on TV, like Survivor or Dancing with the Stars. They are usually unnoticed except for our occasional need for refreshment. Look at this Face! His most recent announcement, ...
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: July 2013
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 15, 2013. Why do I feel like a wastrel when lying abed on a sunny Sunday afternoon, nose to book, and somehow industrious when doing the same while basted and splayed out at the beach? This has nothing to do with the subject at hand, yet again renovating the window boxes, but it's a stuck thought that needed to shake lose. Of course, tragedy also occurs with fish, when one allows one's prince to tend to one's pond- though I am never one to assess blame. Fine, but a little dull. Michael's sup...

Sunday, October 21, 2012. Dracunculus Vulgaris, My Holy Grail? I recently decided to begin fiddling with twitter and am reveling in my popularity. In virtually no time - just a few weeks- I have ten followers. Some might say eight, since the list includes my daughter and my sister who charitably plonked my twitter follow button, which will probably be the end of their involvement with my communications. Of people that are talking to themselves. . Posted by Stephanie Cavanaugh. Links to this post. Theres ...
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: On Faking It ... Again
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2015/06/on-faking-it-again.html
Monday, June 22, 2015. On Faking It . Again. Observe my forlorn hydrangea Margot. She's eight or ten or who knows how old now with one lousy blossom. This is all the flowering I can expect this summer as the hydrangea sets bud for the following season on the current season's woody stalks, which they more or less reliably do - unless some Prince wanders by with loppers and in a fit of neatness (would that such a fit take hold in the garage) lops off the buds in September. Yesterday, in what will be will b...

Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Grown Any Good Books Lately? On Capitol Hill they're pushing up like weeds, the free book boxes. Some are organized under the umbrella of littlefreelibrary.org, a group I'd never heard of until yesterday but is apparently an international org with on-line maps showing people desperate for something to read where to find boxes in places like Turin and Detroit. They also sell labels and placards and brochures and suggest building plans and materials. Capitol Hill Books Window. Some ...
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: A Rambling Tale of Hydrangeas
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2011/06/rambling-tale-of-hydrangeas.html
Sunday, June 12, 2011. A Rambling Tale of Hydrangeas. That house was quite the argument for staging. It had been on the market for many months without an offer, despite an excellent location in upper Northwest Washington, a pleasing front porch, large sunny rooms and an increasingly modest price tag- so victimized was it by its owner's deranged sense of style. All of the cabinets in the kitchen were harvest gold metal that made tinny shudders when opened. The wallpaper was of tea kettles and kittens.
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: The NY Times is High on Pots - What are they Smoking?
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2015/07/plant-this-in-new-york-times.html
Thursday, July 30, 2015. The NY Times is High on Pots - What are they Smoking? Stone Urn on a Concrete Pillar. Sometimes, and by this I mean daily, the design pages of the New York Times. Provoke me to scream, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS? And I say this fondly, being an ex-New Yorker, born and raised and schooled and once able to tell at a glance a real Gucci bit on a shoe from a knock-off - and consider this essential information. The collection, by "designer" Trey Jones, begins. Otherly, every otherly, t...
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: Oh Willow Weep for Me! A Gardening Trail of Tears.
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-trail-of-tears-for-things-gone-wrong.html
Friday, June 26, 2015. Oh Willow Weep for Me! A Gardening Trail of Tears. A Stand of Lilies. This is what you call a stand of lilies. Oh, I suppose if you had acres to occupy you might do a lusher job, but here we're talking about a bitty border on a city street - so it's quite a sight. And there's no support or ties or whatnots. The stalks are proudly upright and massed with yellow trumpets. A Droop of Lily. And to think of all the self-congratulatory yelping that went on as I left the house with a fond...
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: Tradescantia Pallida - Mind the Gaps
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2011/08/tradescantia-pallida-mind-gaps.html
Monday, August 8, 2011. Tradescantia Pallida - Mind the Gaps. I just flipped through 42 googlets on the care and feeding and propagation of the wandering jew, the plant least likely to require any instructions whatsoever. There were many more but even though I am in FULL PROCRASTINATION MODE, I was getting bored. Similarly, you really have to work hard to come up with instructions for cultivating the wandering jew- which is why it's amazing that so many people have done so (me included now it seems).
Mad Dabblings in a City Garden: January 2012
http://whoneedsflowers.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 30, 2012. Hopping along the trunk of the downed tree diagonally across from my Capitol Hill house appeared to be the activity of the day in these parts. Since the homes here are at the century mark, one presumes the tree was as well. The elms that line our block of Kentucky Avenue, SE are well known, in any case, standing nearly twice the height of most of the houses and big as a wine barrels at the base. I was thinking a chuppa. Were a multicultural lot. Posted by Stephanie Cavanaugh.

Rowhouse Redux
Tuesday, February 23, 2010. One of the consequences-cum-opportunities in my home came from having to create a chase in the corner of my bedroom for my water heater's exhaust. The chase resulted in a 24" deep inset, which created a perfect little space behind my bedroom door for a desk. There were only two problems: First, there was nothing that I could find that I both liked and was in my price range. (What? I have expensive tastes! Thankfully I had pictures of the framing to help locate the studs) I pla...
