ROWING FOR PLEASURE

Saturday, 8 August 2015. Got me a boat. When I wrote on Tuesday that I was looking for a row/sail boat, I never thought I would own one by Friday. Browsermeister Brian Pearson pointed out an ad for a boat that seemed to fit the bill, so I schlepped over to Clacton yesterday to take a shuftie. I was shown her by one of the builders, Alan Hopewell. His old friend John, the owner and the other builder, suddenly and distressingly died three years ago and the boat must now be sold. Tuesday, 4 August 2015.

ROWING FOR PLEASURE: October 2014

http://rowingforpleasure.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, 25 October 2014. Ben Ainslie on Southampton Water. To Southampton betimes, to a public house recommended by a person I met in the queue for saveloys at the Great River Race who informed me that the best home brewed ale in the city is to be found at the Platform Tavern in the ancient walls of that place, hard by the Dancing Man brewery. We launched our boat, the Solent galley Langstone Lady, at Warsash and rowed to Town Quay, conveniently about 100 yards from the pub. Links to this post. This we...

ROWING FOR PLEASURE: December 2014

http://rowingforpleasure.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 31 December 2014. Mike Gilbert has a brilliant phone but it struggles with low light. Actually this gives a rather ethereal effect to this shot of Solent galley Sallyport on the way to Emsworth for beer last night. Coxing out of Emsworth on the way back, I discovered how disorientating the dark can be. But it was magical - can't wait to do it again. Next time, for curry. Links to this post. Monday, 29 December 2014. In Praise of Overlapping Handles. I disagree. A good gap between the handl...

ROWING FOR PLEASURE: End of an Era

http://rowingforpleasure.blogspot.com/2015/08/end-of-era.html

Tuesday, 4 August 2015. End of an Era. You may have noticed the blog header has changed. For those of you who have already forgotten what it looked like, here it is for one last time. It is my favourite image of my sliding seat Chippendale Sprite, Snarleyow, taken at East Head looking out towards Thorney Island about ten years ago. She has been spending more and more time upside down behind the house, looking more and more despondent. Hi Chris, hope the head is healing up ok. Finding a used Walkabout...

ROWING FOR PLEASURE: A Genius Boat

http://rowingforpleasure.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-genius-boat.html

Monday, 1 October 2012. One of the people at the Horse and Jockey (S of the H) on Saturday was Jake Frith, editor of Sailing Today, who frequently rows from his home at Netley down Southampton Water and up the Hamble to Swanwick where his office is. His boat is a plastic canoe converted to rowing by the simple wheeze of cutting a rowing station out of an old quad scull and bolting it down in the canoe. 11 October 2012 at 13:58. If you buy a used rowboat. Make sure about this. 26 February 2013 at 18:45.

ROWING FOR PLEASURE: Rowing Round Things (5)

http://rowingforpleasure.blogspot.com/2015/05/rowing-round-things-5.html

Friday, 15 May 2015. Rowing Round Things (5). This week I helped shepherd a crew of ladies round the Isle of Wight with Langstone Adventure Rowing. We boarded the rib at dawn and towed the plastic gig Deborah out of Chichester Harbour towards the meeting point. Off St Helens, the crew boarded Deborah from the support boat, having been picked up at Portsmouth. They rowed past Osborne House, home of Queen Victoria (but she wasn't in). We towed the gig back to Chichester Harbour as this happened:. Will they...

Tales of Illusion: Illusion's First Sail

http://tales-of-illusion.blogspot.com/2010/09/illusions-first-sail.html

Tuesday, 14 September 2010. I attended the HBBR Cotwolds rally on September 11th/12th and I'm very grateful to Phill OxBorrow who lent me the lug sail from his canoe Tonawanda. And helped me jury rig Illusion. I used a windsurf mast cut down to just over 3m (10ft) planning that it could fit inside the hull in the future - it is 37% back from the bow just like the Paradox. Tales of Illusion: Hull Decking

http://tales-of-illusion.blogspot.com/2011/05/hull-decking.html

Monday, 30 May 2011. Its been a while since I updated the blog - I tend to use the HBBR forum more (see http:/ uk-hbbr-forum.967333.n3.nabble.com/Tales-of-Illusion-td2740952.html. So here is a video of the decking which improves her dramatically. The only issue now is to keep the rain out! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Simple template. Tales of Illusion: August 2011

http://tales-of-illusion.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Monday, 22 August 2011. Illusion Hull for sale. Due to lack of space imposed by SWMBO my Illusion. Hull drew the short straw and has to go unfortunately. So if anyone is interested in the bare hull let me know - either by a comment or a direct email. She is not finished, so you have plenty of options for the seating, stowage and a mini-cabin. Gardens of Fenwick: Warts, Blemishes and Other Flaws...

http://prep4texas.blogspot.com/2015/07/warts-blemishes-and-other-flaws.html

The building of a John Welsford Pathfinder. Sailing adventures to follow. Sunday, July 26, 2015. Warts, Blemishes and Other Flaws. I've made progress with Gardens. And will push on through the summer and as late into the fall as possible (hard to believe I'm contemplating the coming winter in July.). But reviewing Gardens'. Hull today with a realistically critical eye I saw the warts, blemishes and other flaws I've created. July 27, 2015 at 5:45 PM. I identify with your feelings. Similar stuff happen...

Gardens of Fenwick: Heading Home

http://prep4texas.blogspot.com/2015/07/heading-home.html

The building of a John Welsford Pathfinder. Sailing adventures to follow. Thursday, July 23, 2015. We are on the road and heading home, having spent the last 11 days in the Colorado Rockies riding bicycles, enjoying the scenery and visiting with family and friends. Bicycle riding in the Rockies was everything I expected and more. Beautiful scenery… High mountain passes… Difficult climbs… Thrilling descents… and Thin air…. Would I do it again? Yes, but maybe not for a year or two. Thursday Thoughts - Tools.

Tales of Illusion: Desert Island Discs

http://tales-of-illusion.blogspot.com/2010/10/desert-island-discs.html

Wednesday, 6 October 2010. Since time began BBC Radio 4 have a weekly show where celebrities chose just 10 tracks they could have if washed up (Lost? On a deserted island. People often choose tracks that bring back memories and its a lot harder than you think to pick just 10 tracks. For a musical diversion from boating I'm building my list of 10 tracks here. I vividly remember hearing the song and liked it instantly. Here is a modern live version:. Around about 1973 I was at school friend's house. We...

Gardens of Fenwick: August 2015

http://prep4texas.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

The building of a John Welsford Pathfinder. Sailing adventures to follow. Sunday, August 30, 2015. I tapered the main mast staves the other day using a variation of Joel's plywood-edge-and-router jig. A 12' 1x8 with one edge squared up on the table saw is the base, secured on two saw horses. A 12' 1x4 was screwed onto the base to form the taper (35mm from the edge at one end, 27mm from the edge at the other). The boat hook I made for my sister and her husband floats! Friday, August 28, 2015. Staves for t...

Gardens of Fenwick: The Pathfinder Design

http://prep4texas.blogspot.com/p/coffee.html

The building of a John Welsford Pathfinder. Sailing adventures to follow. November 18, 2011. Photo demonstrating the stability of the Pathfinder hull:. While I do not expect to have three grown men standing on Gardens of Fenwick's. Gunwale, it is nice to know the hull is this stable. John Welsford's Pathfinder design is, to my eye, elegant, beautiful and purpose-designed for boat-camp-cruising. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Evolution of an Idea… or…. Hold onto your hats. Gardens of Fenwick: Loss of Power

http://prep4texas.blogspot.com/2015/08/loss-of-power.html

The building of a John Welsford Pathfinder. Sailing adventures to follow. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Something happened to the electrical service in the boat bay (where Gardens. Fortunately, I do have plenty of projects - boat and non-boat - to work on that won't require electricity in the boat bay. Sanding Gardens. Will have to wait until the power is restored.
