I have been working and experimenting with Raku, and other firing techniques, for over 15 years. I like to combine glass and clay in my artwork. Not all of my images are here as my friends and family know I am a last minute person and my pieces are not ready until a few hours before a show. Saggar fired pottery combines elemental salts and natural, herbaceous materials to create a unique environment in which the artwork is fired. Sealed off from oxygen, these elements are fired to 1000oF in a saggar, which creates a smooth, lustrous finish that combines in an unpredictable way. Noor / Light Art Show / May 2011. Raku is the name given to a pottery art form that originated in Japan in the sixteenth century. Raku uses its own glazes to create its unique effects. Heated to 1800 degrees farenheit, the red hot piece is lifted out of the kiln with tongs and placed in a reduction chamber containing combustible materials. The interaction of the chamber, the glaze and the combustible material creates a unique piece that cannot be reproduced again. Enjoy this piece as you will not see one exactly like it again.
