The Rudderpost...

May 17, 2011. My father passed away this morning, after a 14 year struggle with diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. In recent years he had become more fearful that his heart would fail or he would be hit with a stroke and be faced with a future of continued physical and mental decline, living out his days in a nursing home and dependent on others. He hadn't wanted to lose his independence, but he had feared being alone. 1974 Mexico. Was it four weeks that I skipped school to go with him? We trave...

The Rudderpost...: Infatuated with Japan

http://www.rudderpost.blogspot.com/2010/05/infatuated-with-japan.html

April 09, 2010. Maiko (apprentice geisha) in Kyoto. Julian was in Greece with a school tour, our house was being listed for sale, and we badly needed a vacation. so Satomi and I traveled to Japan with our friends Deepak and Vineeta. Yokohama Minato-Mirai, with the sail-shaped Intercontinental Hotel. We spent three nights in Shinagawa, near Tokyo, then traveled to Osaka and Kyoto for two nights, then traveled back east to Yokohama, where we spent five nights at the Intercontinental Hotel. The Rudderpost...: Yak ranching, brain surgery and high performance computing

http://www.rudderpost.blogspot.com/2010/08/yak-ranching-brain-surgery-and-high.html

August 07, 2010. Yak ranching, brain surgery and high performance computing. As of this week I have a new position, as Director of Computing Services for a new company called CODONiS. Here's the longer story. What Jim described to me was a new company creating a large-scale computing platform that would allow biologists and clinicians to make much faster progress in understanding the basic workings of our DNA, and hence make faster strides in cracking cancer and other diseases. Stay tuned for more.

The Rudderpost...: From Airstreams to Gulfstreams

http://www.rudderpost.blogspot.com/2011/05/from-airstreams-to-gulfstreams.html

May 10, 2011. From Airstreams to Gulfstreams. This week I had a chance to fly on Dave Sabey's Gulfstream jet, on a day trip south to San Diego. The purpose of the trip was to meet with the two major gene sequencer vendors, present the mission of our company and seek strategic/business partnerships. I was hoping for some stick time on the G-4, but I deferred to David Galas of ISB, who is a former fighter pilot as well as a computational biologist, and hence more deserving of the shotgun seat than me.

The Rudderpost...: Sale of our house

http://www.rudderpost.blogspot.com/2010/05/sale-of-our-house.html

May 15, 2010. Sale of our house. The sale of our Kirkland home closed yesterday. As of today we are living in a small apartment in Bellevue while our new home is built nearby. The sale and move-out was a staggering amount of work over a short amount of time. We finished the packing and cleaning last night at 2:00AM, with the help of friends and family members. Thank you Rick and Janet, and thank you Deepak and Vineeta. The first offer on the house came in less than two days, via an emailed fax while I wa...

Meanderings

By admin on May 6, 2011. Many river users consider dredging (or lack of ) to be a major issue and, given financial and logistical constraints, it seems unlikely that any major undertakings will be possible in the foreseeable future. In arriving at a realistic dredging policy, it should not be too difficult to recognise these ‘hot spots’ and for the Customer Charter commitment to be such that any notification of problems at these locations be given immediate attention. Dealing with depths outside the fair...
