The strain of being secretary to this rabble is clearly beginning to show. Once six foot tall with a full head of hair, this now diminutive (and bald) singer started visiting folk clubs about the same time he discovered the delights of beer. Only to be seen joining in with the chorus, he was moved to start singing in public when, during his Somerset period, he joined a morris team that didn’t sing! The Rum and Shrub story. It all started with…. A chat in the pub one night amongst a group of traditional singers from Cornwall, and almost before you could say “Pussers”, Rum and Shrub Shantymen were launched and we soon developed a worldwide reputation for lively singing of shanties, sea songs and folk songs. We have been singing together as a group since 1991 and known each other for a lot longer than that! Either as a CD purchase or a download and from music stores. Keep up to date.

In Albaston was the place where it all began for me, yet inspiration came from the other end of Cornwall on the Lizard. The Cadgwith Singers. Are famed in the world of pub singing and yet so little known outside of it! We got to the Inn at about 9pm and were told by a few people we were too early! Because none of the people in those photos or paintings were alive anymore.
