Rundell Ramblings

Sunday, 20 January 2013. Back in October we learnt that Auric Air, a Tanzanian airline, was adding Mpanda to its flight routes. So when Theo was due for some immunisations around December we decided to take advantage of this and fly to Dar for a New Year break. It was so nice! We flew from Mpanda to Mwanza on this 12-seater aeroplane, hung out in Mwanza for a few hours and then took another internal flight to Dar, which arrived in the late evening. In other words : We got to Dar in less than 12 hours!

Rundell Ramblings: August 2012

http://rundellramblings.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, 16 August 2012. Our tank and pump. The tank is in turn plumbed into our house so we can turn on the pump whenever we want water to come out of our taps/showers/toilet cisterns (we have yet to decide whether to leave it on all day - those electric pumps are pretty noisy! It's a bit of a faff but it's worth it to have enough water! Mostly we are thankful that we have access to mains water at all and can afford it - not everyone here can say the same! Wednesday, 1 August 2012. We stayed at River V...

Rundell Ramblings: October 2011

http://rundellramblings.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Friday, 7 October 2011. One of the nice things about the language course is that the teachers understand how full our brains are by Friday, so we tend to do fun activities like excursions or games that use our Swahili but without necessarily loading us with new information. The most enjoyable for me so far has been the cooking day. We also got to pound the herbs for chai (tea) and the ginger for the sauce (which we accidentally put in the chai as well - oops! It was a fun day, and also brought home to us...

Rundell Ramblings: May 2012

http://rundellramblings.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 29 May 2012. Long time no blog. As we're now in the process of booking flights to return to Tanzania in mid-late June and are more in the swing of things with regards to parenting, it seemed like a good time to start blogging again, hopefully I'll manage to do so regularly! Finally, for those of you who haven't seen these on Facebook, or enjoy repetition, here's a mini photo summary of our time in the UK:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Matt and Liz Wisbey. Rundell Ramblings: October 2012

http://rundellramblings.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, 20 October 2012. Writing down languages for the first time. Here in Mpanda, we've just had a workshop to create our first experimental rules for writing down the Bende and Pimbwe languages. I (Olly) was working with the Bende language. Means 'hunters', the root is. This activity helps you work out all the consonants in the language which, along with other steps, is the foundation for making a good alphabet. As well as looking at things like consonants, vowels and vowel length, a significant fea...

Rundell Ramblings: September 2011

http://rundellramblings.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 14 September 2011. Oliver Rundell: Dragon Slayer! Well, not quite. But due to Olly's previous experience in Tanzania, he has been called upon a couple of times to come to the assistance of some of our friends here at language school. On the first such occasion, we'd just got to our banda in the evening when we heard a shriek from a neighbour crying "Olly and Cat, Olly and Cat, there's a baby scorpion outside my tent! I'm very thankful for the extra protection of a mosquito net right now) One o...

Dan’s Book Reports. House – May 2012. Email list sign up. Dan’s Book Report – The Magician’s Nephew. It is a classic fantasy book suitable for people aged 7 -15. I would give the book 8.5/10 because although it is a good book and overall I enjoyed reading it, there are a few things I don’t like. If you would like to read it – you can find it on amazon. The Magician’s Nephew (The Chronicles of Narnia, Book 1). Book read and report written by Dan R. Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window).
