Not a Dead Communist: DWAITAS: 9th Doctor Sourcebook
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2015/05/dwaitas-9th-doctor-sourcebook.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 4 May 2015. DWAITAS: 9th Doctor Sourcebook. And, then, in 2005, the series came back. But what do we have? Well, we start, as always, with an examination of the Doctor and his companions. Rose, and arguably Captain Jack, are the only real companions here, of course, and the book acknowledges that. However, Jackie and Mickey are included as important supporting characters, and there's a discussion later on in the book (in the Aliens of London. HiG 6 We have a cover! DWAITAS: ...

Not a Dead Communist: DW Companions as PCs: Ace
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2015/02/dw-companions-as-pcs-ace.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 2 February 2015. DW Companions as PCs: Ace. Mel leaves at the end of the twenty-fourth season. (Yes: twenty-fourth. suck on that, Supernatural. After vacillating between two characters that broadly fit this concept, she settles on Dorothy McShane, almost universally known by her nickname of 'Ace'. She also has a pretty good skill in motorcycle maintenance and repair, which likely extends to other mechanical tasks. She also seems, in The Curse of Fenric. She evidently comes f...

Not a Dead Communist: DW Companions as PCs: Bernice Summerfield
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2015/02/dw-companions-as-pcs-bernice-summerfield.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 16 February 2015. DW Companions as PCs: Bernice Summerfield. The series is cancelled at the end of the twenty sixth season. Some time after, a new player joins the group. Deciding that everyone is getting a bit too old to still be playing teenage girls, she decides. You were expecting Grace Holloway, or Rose, or somebody? You're wondering who the heck I'm on about? The classic series of Doctor Who. Ignoring that, then, when it comes to licensed spin-off media, or "tie-in med...

Not a Dead Communist: May 2014
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 19 May 2014. DW Companions as PCs: Harry Sullivan. And so he creates Harry Sullivan. Although hes a military member of UNIT, hes a doctor, not a soldier - the British branchs Medical Officer, in fact. Hes also one of only two UNIT military staff members that we see in the classic series who arent from the British Army (the other is Corporal Bell). Instead, Harry is a Surgeon-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Medical Service. Links to this post. Monday, 5 May 2014. DW Companions a...

Not a Dead Communist: March 2015
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 2 March 2015. The Companions That Sort Of Were. After the dismal failure of the 1996 TV movie (decent audience figures, but pretty much everyone hated it), Doctor Who. Returned to existing solely in the spin-off media. If a true Eighth Doctor era exists at all, which one can certainly debate, then the vast bulk of it surely exists outside of TV. And its there we have to look for his companions, whether they be those canonically named in The Night of the Doctor.

Not a Dead Communist: July 2014
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 14 July 2014. The Companions That Weren't: The '70s. This involved a significant shift in the shows direction and style, with a lot of changes behind the scenes as well. For the purposes of this blog, though, what matters is that, coincidentally, it happened in 1980. And that means that there are three well-defined periods of the shows history, which just happen to line up with chronological decades. I previously looked. We begin with Hal the Archer. Not a Dead Communist: The Companions That Weren't: the '80s
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-companions-that-werent-80s.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 9 February 2015. The Companions That Weren't: the '80s. The year 1980 saw a major change in the production of Doctor Who. Is very clearly a distinct thing. So, having reached the last companion of the classic era, now it's time to look back over that decade, as I did with the '60s. The one exception is Todd. From the Fifth Doctor story Kinda. Rachel is from the year 1959, and, for bonus points if your game is more based on the modern show, is Welsh. In the story, she's is ab...

Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 22 December 2014. DW Companions as PCs: Peri Brown. Tegan leaves part way through the twenty-first season. Her player hasnt quite given up on the idea of playing a colonial, instead of yet another Brit, but evidently feels that her next character should do a lot more screaming and a lot less of anything useful, bringing back some of the flavour of the campaigns early days. Not a Dead Communist: October 2014
http://jrevell.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Not a Dead Communist. Monday, 27 October 2014. DW Companions as PCs: Nyssa. Probably shes heard of Romana (perhaps shes a friend of that player), and knows that shes left, so she sees an available niche, and designs a character that fills much the same function. Which brings us to Nyssa of Traken. Who does, of course, become a regular PC from Logopolis. Nyssa, like Romana, comes from a technologically advanced culture. Quite how advanced is hard to say, because Doctor Who. Links to this post. Now, we jus...
