Jon's Travel: June 2010
http://jonstravel.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Zanzibar. Its a real place. South African Phone Number. The Art of Moto-Taxi Riding. Methodist Mission Cyangugu: Your Grandparents Lak. Friday, June 25, 2010. Zanzibar. It's a real place. There is little about the literary, historical or mythological accounts of Zanzibar that I need to relate here. Partly due to my ignorance of them but mostly due to their lack of fidelity in describing the modern exoticism and allure of Zanzibar. There is little for me to write. What's there to say? I'm in Cape Town at ...

Triathlete Chronicles: My running handbag
http://triathletechronicles.blogspot.com/2013/11/my-running-handbag.html
The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. Last weekend on my 42k training run, when my friend Carrie met me to run a stint with me, one of the first things she said to me related to the Camelbak I've started using on long runs. I was wondering how you carried things you need when you run this far. I wouldn't drive 42ks without my handbag.". So I guess it's time for a tour of my running handbag and its contents. The bag itself - The reason I chose a Camelbak. Um Thanks for that. Could be considered a safe...

Triathlete Chronicles: High points, low points, and the all important three points
http://triathletechronicles.blogspot.com/2015/06/high-points-low-points-and-all.html
The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. High points, low points, and the all important three points. Wow I did it. I finished The North Face 100. It's two weeks later and if I'm really honest about it - the relief of knowing I've accrued another three qualifying points for the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc. Is my most dominant emotion. Low point: How I felt on Saturday morning. High point: Having friends at the start. Low point: Pretty much the entire first 20ks. High point: The Tarros Ladders. Now, when I sa...

Triathlete Chronicles: Farewell, winter solstice
http://triathletechronicles.blogspot.com/2015/06/farewell-winter-solstice.html
The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. Farewell, winter solstice. I haven't had to deal with winter training for a couple of years. well, not in the deep depths of winter, otherwise known as the winter solstice. Even as I sit here on Monday morning, writing this, it's only just getting light and it's nearly 7am. I didn't have a great weekend of training over the weekend, but yesterday I trumped winter solstice. Shiny new science building at Boggo Road Precinct. Maritime Museum, South Bank, Brisbane.

Triathlete Chronicles: A journey song for TNF100
http://triathletechronicles.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-journey-song-for-tnf100.html
The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. A journey song for TNF100. For someone who never trains with an iPod, music can be pretty important to me when I race. I wrote a previous blog post about songs that remind me of Ironman. In fact I used to pick a theme song almost habitually when I started building my training up for an event. For my very first Ironman. It was Opportunity by Pete Murray. I got through my long day at Ironman Western Australia. With the defiance of The Pretender by The Foo Fighters.

Triathlete Chronicles: Loop after loop after loop
http://triathletechronicles.blogspot.com/2015/04/loop-after-loop-after-loop.html
The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. Loop after loop after loop. Last weekend was the biggest running weekend I've ever compeleted - 82ks in two runs. On Saturday I met up with a friend who dragged me halfway around the river loop before I headed for home a little slower. On Sunday I started in the dark, and took in this view on a loop around Enoggera Reservoir at the Gap. My hard training is over. Just four weeks of taper before The North Face 100. Monday, April 20, 2015. The north face 100. Long r...

The adventures of an athletic powerhouse. Need a cure for ornithiphobia? Those of you who follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter would already have seen this photo. I snapped it part way through my weekly run to work. I have a confession to make. . Taking this photo got my heart rate up more than the run did. I think Im ornithophobic. While sneaking up to take photos like this might be considered therapy, I dont think my fear of birds is going anywhere, anytime soon. Read the full story. Oceania and...
