I get older, eat bad food, then redeem myself | running into myself

https://runningintomyself.wordpress.com/2008/12/10/i-get-older-eat-bad-food-then-redeem-myself

Me and Elvis, among others. I get older, eat bad food, then redeem myself. December 10, 2008. Earlier days: my brother Kenton looks much more interested in Santa than I was (I’m on the right). Today was my birthday. I was an occasion that my mother didn’t quite live to see: the completion of her own 53rd year. It was a bittersweet day. Pad Thai, Bad Thai. I caught the 49 bus downtown, my first stop a small shop called Coffee Life. Hongxing Lu, downtown Chengdu (Flickr). Just anticipating sipping from the...

Happy | running into myself

https://runningintomyself.wordpress.com/2008/12/03/happy

Me and Elvis, among others →. December 3, 2008. For a short moment today, I was happy. OK, maybe for two moments. I received my Bialetti Moka Express stove-top coffee maker today. Many years ago I had one that my mother gave me, and I loved it, but it was eventually abandoned in an apartment in Evanston, Illinois. To read while I sip coffee from my new machine. Whose bank is it anyway? OK students, our new word for today is lipogrammatic. I’ve heard of liposuction. A lipogram author avoiding e. 8221; whi...

Ho ho ho, y’all | running into myself

https://runningintomyself.wordpress.com/2008/12/24/ho-ho-ho-yall

My new website →. Ho ho ho, y’all. December 24, 2008. I’m in a vaguely Christmas-y mood, which is OK since it’s Christmas Eve. My Scrooge side must be in regression; maybe it’s the omnipresent holiday decorations in. Minus the consumer frenzy. It is also damned COLD outside, baby. I took Xiao Gou Gou for a walk and bought a couple of small boxes of milk (I guess the milk scare is over in. Then resolved to stay inside the rest of the night. The milk is for my Christmas morning. Roger a la Grenouille.

Bounty | running into myself

https://runningintomyself.wordpress.com/2008/12/14/bounty

I get older, eat bad food, then redeem myself. Really weird →. December 14, 2008. This past week was bountiful in many ways. There were small things, such as the new Moka Express. Coffee maker, the hot chocolate experience, and the grilled peanut butter sandwich. Then, this evening there was the homemade split pea soup. Royally. I don’t use the word. It was heady, aromatic, deep, rich, and left me feeling really, well, caffeinated. Go figure. These were coffees that weren’t exactly fresh; f...An Indian r...

Really weird | running into myself

https://runningintomyself.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/really-weird

Ho ho ho, y’all →. December 19, 2008. Fountain, new campus, UESTC. Now the truth comes out: I’m a coffee addict. Usually I can’t drink it after about 12 noon, though, because of the danger of sleeplessness at night. Being sick, however, I can safely consume vast quantities of the stuff, with a hardly noticeable effect on my spaced-out, drowsy brain. It’s a miracle of sorts, a silver lining to my cloud. Life is just a blur. So what does one DO with the unusual luxury of four days? I also made some. Addres...

Sunday, October 30, 2005. Gym, shopping, and lies. Posted by Steve Harms at 11:04 AM. Saturday, October 22, 2005. The bad part is that the heat is not turned on yet. Yep, the government controls when the heat is turned off and on in most places here! Can you believe that? Last night I went out to dinner with some co-workers to a restaurant I had not been too before. The one nice thing about the colder weather. places start serving hot-pot again! Wednesday, June 29, 2005. I finally got around to getting a cell phone. I picked one that also had a camera and an MP3 player, so now I won't have to buy seperate ones of those. It also has a FM radio, but I haven't discovered any good stations yet. I'm still trying to figure out how all of the features work, but it's a pretty cool toy! Posted by Steve Harms at 10:43 PM. http://zharahk.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 31, 2005. The end of March is here and hopefully the end of winter too. I've been told that Dalian is one of the prettiest cities in China and I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like when everything starts blooming. During the winter it's pretty much like any city. cold and gray. Laborers started trimming trees and planting new shrubs and flowers all over the city a few days ago. Monday, August 29, 2005. On Saturday a few of us went out for Kareoke (above blurry picture. they sure love kareoke here! And then went out for dinner at a really nice restaurant called One Times One. No one seems to know why it has that name. After dinner we went to a place called Augustus Pub to see a band that we saw at the Beer Festival a few weeks ago. They're from the Phillipines and were pretty good! I'll have to find out what the name of their band is. Posted by Steve Harms at 3:35 PM. Typhoon Ma...

I got to get out of the city twice in one weekend! Posted by Steve Harms at 11:17 AM. Thursday, May 19, 2005. This weekend we're suppose to go some resort about an hour outside of Dalian. http://zharahk.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 28, 2005. As I watched the chinese TV shows I started to wonder where China is heading. It's a strange mix of communism and capitalism. The people seem to love western products and ideas. From what I've been able to tell from my short time here now, and from my last trip here in 2001 ( China Trip 2001. Poor Mao must be turning over in his grave. It will be interesting to see what changes will take place in the next few years, especially after the olympics are held here in 2008. Anyways, ...

Monday, January 31, 2005. First post, welcome! Welcome to my Blog! Just two more weeks until I fly out to Dalian, and there seems no shortage of things that need to be done. I'm going out to the Chinese embassy today and pick up my entry visa. I'm almost finished shopping for things that I need to take, but I keep thinking up new things that would come in handy. Thursday, July 28, 2005. I thought I would add a bunch of pictures from around Dalian. Enjoy! This is a statue at Rhyme of the Sea Square. At first, I thought it was dragons, but they are really waves with seagulls. Here's a man-made waterfall at Rhyme of the Sea Square. Here's a great big turtle statue at Rhyme of the Sea Square. Along the road leaving Rhyme of the Sea Square are these huge statues of aquatic life. A closer view of the tiger statue at Tiger beach that was in the previous post. I haven’t...

The holidays come careening like a noisy parade, despite their arrival in the midst of the quiet beginning of winter. For a bit, we forget about the silence, while decorating and baking and wrapping and celebrating. It is in the darkest time of the year, that we find the meaning of light and look forward to its arrival. This year, I added a...

running into myself - a transplanted life in China

A transplanted life in China. Published on August 10, 2015. This was my first visit to Arles, in Provence in southern France. The town contains some impressive Roman vestiges, including an amphitheater and an Arena. I was fortunate that my arrival coincided with the annual photography exhibition. Les Rencontres de la Photographie,. Held in locations and historic buildings throughout the town. I spent one entire day wandering from one photo exhibit to the next, in the intense summer heat.
