Rural Revolution

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. We've had cows on the brain lately. (Actually, I suppose you can argue we always. Have cows on the brain.). In fact, her wanderings may have to do with being in heat, and our neighbor would like her in with the bull at some point, but that will wait. Meanwhile they got back from their trip and Cowbella is back where she belongs. Next issue, little Lucy. Right now the cows are on a neighbor's 20 acre parcel.

Rural Revolution: Last calf of the year

http://www.rural-revolution.com/2013/09/last-calf-of-year.html

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Last calf of the year. I've had a very very rough couple of days. That's because Matilda had her calf yesterday morning - the last calf of the year. Normally this would be wonderful news, but there's been a complication. This meant that despite being a few hours old, the little baby still hadn't had her first drink of the life-nourishing colostrum all calves need for a strong start in life. Despite this, th...

Rural Revolution: Another new calf

http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/05/another-new-calf.html

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Sunday, May 24, 2015. Friday was a hot, humid, thundery afternoon, but the storm clouds dodged around us (which is unfortunate, as we could use the rain). Don and I decided to take a walk. On our way out, we noticed a calf chasing a raven in the field. A few other animals got in on the chase as well. Since the calf was born the farthest possible distance away from the house (of course), we were faced with the task of bringing mama and ba...

Rural Revolution: A calf for Raven

http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/04/ravens-baby.html

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Thursday, April 16, 2015. A calf for Raven. I've been watching Raven carefully for her impending birth. Yesterday morning she tried to make a dash for it - jumping over the fence into the woods - which isn't unusual for a cow who really. Wants to be alone to birth her baby. So we closed her into the barn, to her great annoyance. She frequently laid down and rested for a few moments between contractions. Within seconds, Raven was on her f...

Rural Revolution: Building feed boxes

http://www.rural-revolution.com/2014/10/building-feed-boxes.html

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Ever since Don built the awning. On our barn last year, he's had another project in mind: to build feed boxes for the livestock. Before we had the barn built. We fed the cattle in makeshift feed bins that didn't work well. Dominant animals pushed lower animals out of the way; and hay was wasted like crazy as the animals pulled it out of the boxes and onto the ground where it was trampled and soiled. It was a s...

Rural Revolution: Hoarding

http://www.rural-revolution.com/2010/08/hoarding.html

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, August 18, 2010. I have a pet peeve. I hate the word “hoarding.”. Let me be more specific: I hate the term “hoarding” as applied toward Preppers. Hoarding implies that by buying some extra bottles of shampoo, we are doing so at the expense of others. It implies that we are somehow wrong. That by ramping up our own food storage, we are causing others to go hungry. To prepare for future shortages. Most just choose. I clearly rem...

Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Chickens in the City. Image courtesy of morguefile.com. If a small backyard flock of hens providing fresh, healthy eggs, meat and pest control, plus the sheer fun of watching and hearing chickens do their thing makes you think happy, why not do it? Just because you live in town doesn't mean you wouldn't like to have a chicken or two around the place! You should be able to find out if your area allows chickens by going to their web site or contacting the city offices. Keeping chic...

Country Living in a City Home: July 2014

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Hurry, get the harvest in! And the rush is on. August means bushels of ripe tomatoes, summer squash overrunning the garden, gallons of cucumbers and peppers, and corn tasseling overnight. That is, if you're one of those gardeners who never fails! That's not me and that's probably not you. One crop or another fails now and then and we have to say, "Well, the tomatoes did well, anyway! Which way will it be? It's time to make the decisions and full speed ahead! Where to put the she...

Next step: gravel | Spud Hill Farm

Peace of mind and elbow room. This and that →. August 4, 2015. We got Ben for a couple weeks, so naturally we came up with some dirty work to keep him busy. He started out by helping Geoff clean up the thenches, scooping out loose dirt and smoothing the bottom. Then they started adding gravel – spread, soak, compact, repeat. The goal is to have a hard, level surface to build concrete forms on. It’s hot work, but at least you get your feet wet! Great job, guys! This entry was posted in Uncategorized.

Maximilian's Adventures: February 2013

http://maxisadvent.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Texas, an Eye Opener. The title came from John because he really has not spent much time traveling in Texas as I have (spent my first 7 years here). As we crossed the border from Louisiana into Texas on I-10 there was a mileage sign that read 'El Paso 830 miles', which John replied “man that is a long drive”! The main reason we picked this location is because we know fellow Heartlanders Nancy and Ted Hanson; they are parked one row over and eight rigs down. We have been ...
