Igor Feodorovich Stravinsky was Russian composer, later of French (1934) and American (1945) nationality. Stravinsky was of great importance for the generation of composers after the 1950s. Many Western European composers were influenced by his personal, expressionistic and Russian style. In Russia his idiom was followed by composers like Yevgeny Svetlanov. Sophia Gubaidulina, Sviatolav Ishkanov. And even Rodion Shchedrin.

Svetlanov was born in Moscow on September 6th, 1928. He studied piano with Mariya Gurvich, composition with Mikhail Gnessin and Yuri Shaporin. And conducting with Gauk. Nikolai Myaskovsky was born in the military frontier town of Novo Georgiyevsk (present day Lomze) in the Warsaw governorate of the Polish territories of the Tsarist empire on April 20, 1881. Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich was a Russian composer whose life closely overlapped that of the Soviet Union (1917-1991). His greatest works are generally considered to be his cycles of symphonies and string quartets, 15 of each. The symphonies are evenly spaced throughout his career, while the string quartets are concentrated near the end (1960s-70s). Arvo Pärt is one of the most important living composers of concert music. His first works, dating from the 1950s, showed the influence of Prokofiev. Unlike most composers of major rank, Pärt did not show remarkable talent in his childhood or even in his early adolescence. His first serious study came in 1954 at the Tallinn Music Middle School, but less than a year later he temporarily abandoned it to fulfill military service, playing oboe and percussion in the army band.
