Discovering saffron farms in France. Open House at the saffron farm. We spent a lovely sunny autumn afternoon visiting a local saffron farm (la safranière) near Bordeaux. In training for Christmas lunch…. Carousel at Bordeaux christmas market. Needless to say, a good time was had…. A happy gathering , as usual. And not just because of this. A glimpse of the valley. Hautvillers is a small hilltop village across the river Marne from Épernay in the Champagne region. There are wonderful views of the vineyards and the river valley and a selection of restaurants, cafes , antique dealers and places to try the local product. Le mairie (town hall). At the top of the village is the Église Saint-Sulphide de l’Abbaye Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers. This is the last resting place of Dom Pérignon ( and you know why he is famous! A short trip to Brittany – part two. La Ville Close as the fortress is called. Our journey in Brittany continues as we explore the coastal towns of the southern coast. Concarneau is an old port town with a medieval island fortress linked to the mainland by a drawbridge. Mother’s day in France isn’t until 29. May, but today is mother’s day in the UK. There are so many English living in this area that the local hypermarket is selling mother’s day flowers……. never miss an opportunity…. The Lindt bunny is always with us.
