The Bamburgh Bowman
http://www.rustybodkins.co.uk/the-bamburgh-bowman.php
M often to be found at Bamburgh, the 'King of Castles', in the beautiful county of Northumberland. With a long history as a major stronghold in the North East of England it's a great day out. Besides the castle there's a beautiful beach, the Grace Darling Museum and great places to eat and drink in the village and beyond. There are many kinds of entertainment on Bamburgh's programme throughout the year, visit the website at www.bamburghcastle.com. 2016 dates are on the diary page.
Rusty Bodkins

He 'pavise' shield was a large shield used by crossbowmen and pikemen, so called due to its origins in the Italian city of Pavia. It was built from wood and took several different forms in terms of design. He illustration above by Graham Turner shows a soldier of the Earl of Montrose's retinue at Flodden with a boxed pavise, which has a curved centre section. This allows for a carrying handle and presumably offered some degree of deflection. Here is much more information to be found at:. Original constru...

Flodden 2013
http://www.rustybodkins.co.uk/flodden.php
Saw the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden. If your school is studying it as a topic I can provide short presentations, giving a bit of background, interesting facts and audience participation! I'll test the children's knowledge, and if a suitable outside area is available they can also see the medieval longbow in action. Cost is 75 plus mileage from my home address south of Edinburgh, so get in touch if you would like more information. Contacts at the foot of the page. So it was great to take.

MILITARY MODELLING IN 15TH CENTURY SCOTLAND (and some other bits). Friday, 2 January 2015. The Battle of Linlithgow Bridge 1526. Another big part of my medieval life is Rusty Bodkins, which provides historic display archery with 'have a go' sessions for clients in the heritage industry. Figures are a mixture of Perry, Dixon and Redoubt miniatures. The battle was a fairly significant encounter, and like many engagements in Scotland during the late medieval period it was fought over control of the crown.

MILITARY MODELLING IN 15TH CENTURY SCOTLAND (and some other bits). Wednesday, 15 July 2015. The 'Artillery House', Threave Castle. In case I haven't got enough to do, I'm attempting to model part of the artillery house at Threave Castle in Dumfries and Galloway. The photo above shows the square tower of Threave with the remains of the artillery fortification at the base. A bombard will also be part of the diorama, to illustrate the kind of weapons against which the artillery house would protect the castle.

MILITARY MODELLING IN 15TH CENTURY SCOTLAND (and some other bits). Thursday, 8 January 2015. Six hundred years have passed since the Battle of Agincourt, so I thought I should paint some archers as a tribute. Perry Miniatures released their Agincourt period English Army plastic figures at the tail end of last year. I'll be adding to this one as I go along. Detail of the archers frame from the Perry Miniatures set. One of the archers in the early stages of painting. A bit more done. Work continues! Waterm...
Fourteen50: Mini Moments #1
http://www.fourteen50.com/2015/01/mini-moments-1.html
MILITARY MODELLING IN 15TH CENTURY SCOTLAND (and some other bits). Thursday, 22 January 2015. King James II of Scotland with his standard bearer and herald. Known as 'Fiery Face', due to a large birthmark which covered most of the left side of his face, James II spent the greater part of his short life feuding with the Douglases. It's a fascinating period in Scottish history. This is the first of a few scenes in the conflict I hope to model. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Modelling blogs of note.
