Joining the front, back and sides, February 2012 | Rick's Archtop

https://rvarchtop.wordpress.com/2014/10/02/joining-the-front-back-and-sides-february-2012

Building an archtop guitar from scratch. Joining the front, back and sides, February 2012. October 2, 2014. The first thing after bending the sides and getting them into an acceptable shape was gluing the end blocks. I had to cut some angles into the form holding the sides to allow the perpendicular clamping needed to make sure the heel block was snug against both sides. I then pretty much followed the recommended procedure of gluing in the kerfed linings with a space left for the side braces. You are co...

Carving the Back | Rick's Archtop

https://rvarchtop.wordpress.com/2011/12/31/carving-the-back

Building an archtop guitar from scratch. December 31, 2011. I followed the same procedure for carving the back. The maple is a lot harder and the brown bits here are scorch marks left by the Mini Grinder. My contours must have been a bit out, as I would have had to thin the edge too much to make them fit exactly. It will get better when the recurve is done I hope. A screenshot of the contours. Making the bridge | Rick's Archtop

https://rvarchtop.wordpress.com/2015/10/11/making-the-bridge

Building an archtop guitar from scratch. October 11, 2015. I don’t have photos of the early stages in making the bridge. Basically I glued copies of the templates from the Benedetto plan onto ebony blanks and then shaped them with the linisher. The green tape is there to mark the end of the asymmetric “bevel” in the bridge. Here it is after the bevels have been chiseled and sanded out. And again – sorry it is hard to photograph ebony! Bracing | Rick's Archtop

https://rvarchtop.wordpress.com/2015/10/11/bracing

Building an archtop guitar from scratch. October 11, 2015. Lay the brace on the inside top and transfer the profile with a pencil stuck inside a router bearing. Rough plane the brace down to the pencil mark. There it is after rough fitting. And the other brace – as you can see the fit is not great. Here is the fit after a lot of back and forth with plane and carbon paper (and cups of tea…). And the other brace…. Gluing the first brace down. Gluing the first brace down. I have always wanted to build instruments, but didn't really take the plunge until about 2010. Since then I have completed two guitars (both OM-style) and an F4 mandolin kit. I am currently completing another OM-style guitar and an acoustic archtop. Here are a couple of links:. My blog on the mandolin I built. My blog on the archtop I am still building. Some photos of my first build from a Martin OM Kit. Photos of guitar number 2.
