Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Thursday, September 18, 2008. Disasters and their consequences. Well, here I am, seven years after 9/11, five years after the Great Blackout of 2003, one year after traveling to the earthquake zone around Chincha, Peru, and once again in the midst of a disaster zone: Houston after Hurricane Ike. New Orleans is still not the same three years later; what will happen to Houston after a few more Ikes or Katrinas? In Santiago, Chile. Ryan Chen...

http://perudiary.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Sunday, May 03, 2009. Thoughts on the Financial Crisis. Last week, while in New York for work, I went to an event hosted by the Center for Faith and Work at Redeemer Presbyterian Church. The speakers were Pastor Tim Keller and Julian Robertson of Tiger Management, who I hadn't heard of before but apparently is a titan in finance, one of the inventors of the hedge fund or something like that. On how long the crisis will last. Julian pretty...

http://perudiary.blogspot.com/2007/05/first-week-thoughts-so-i-have-now-been.html
Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Saturday, May 19, 2007. So I have now been in Peru for 10 days, and in Trujillo for exactly a week, and I have so much to write about that I don't know where to begin! Let me start with a few thoughts on how I want to approach the next six months. Another important piece of advice, from many sources including the recent book " The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good. And fina...

Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Sunday, January 31, 2010. Seattle vs. Trujillo vs. New York? A while back I blogged about the surprising similarities between Trujillo, Peru and New York City. Probably all the more striking for being unexpected. Seattle - 600K. Trujillo - 750K. New York - over 8 million. Seattle has gentrified, but is still essentially a small middle-class city with a hippie demographic ringed by more conservative suburbs. There are. Both filled with hig...

Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Friday, July 20, 2007. Trujillo vs. New York? Rural "campesinos" - not like New York. My sister with street kids in Lima - not so different from the Lower East Side. University students/young professionals in Trujillo - not so different from the NYU/Columbia demographic, or yuppies in Manhattan. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In Santiago, Chile. Trujillo vs. New York? One of the most interesting . This is not real life.

Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Tuesday, August 28, 2007. Amazingly, I was able to make that trip to the earthquake zone after all! A brief report on the relief trip we took to Chincha this weekend, exactly ten days after the earthquake. The worst of the cleanup has already taken place, but I believe we were able to deliver help to some people in real need. Finally around 2pm we had distributed everything we had. We had to turn away 5 people at the last distribution...

Diary of a short-term missionary and would-be social entrepreneur. Friday, February 20, 2009. Cost of living and who's really "rich". Since leaving New York nearly two years ago, I've heard several offhand comments made by people from other parts of the country about how wealthy New Yorkers are, as if they're on a completely different level than ordinary Americans. This has left me scratching my head. Are they really? By contrast, so many people in Houston drive SUV's and live in big houses with huge fla...
