了願寺過去帖 によると、平野郷泥堂町 (現在の大阪市平野区) にあった了願寺は 元禄元年寅の年 (1688年) にこの地に移ってきたと記載されてあります。 ところが1934年、拡張工事の完成目前であった施設は、室戸台風の襲来を受け、その立地条件と無理な造成による脆弱な土地の状態も悪因となり、計187名の死者を出し (入所者173名 職員3名 職員家族11名)、その後入所者は他の施設に預けられました。 施設自体は岡山県の 長島 の西端部に移動し、名称も 光明園 と改められ、1938年落成式典が挙行されました。 この記念碑は平成八年の らい予防法 廃止に伴い、強制収容絶対隔離を根幹として日本のハンセン病対策の終焉を記念して平成九年 (1997年) 十一月十九日に邑久光明園入園者自治会により建立されたものです。 加えて、戦後昭和二五年 (1950年) の ジェーン台風. その地は、昭和四 年前後に埋立てられ、そこに中島工業団地 (中島二丁目) が造成されました。 大阪マンハッタン構想 と呼ばれたこの都市計画には、中島の マンハッタン と中心街を結ぶ阪急線の延伸ということまで含まれていたそうです。

正成湊川にて忠死 (延元元年一三三六年) してのち、隠遁の志頻 (しき) りにして、ひそかに摂州住吉郡平野郷に閑居し、ついに一刹を同所泥堂町 (でいどうちょう) に創建し、即ち了願寺と号して真言の道場を開く。 ここに河内国若江郡萱振 (かやふり) 村恵光寺は、同国久宝寺 (きゅうほうじ) 村顕証寺と互いに本末雌雄の争いをおこし、本寺に対し伏せざるの儀あって、ついに東派の本廟に帰参あり。 楠木正成が湊川で忠義を尽くして亡くなった (延元元年1336年) のち、 安間了願は 隠遁したいという気持ちを抑えきれず、ひそかに摂州国の住吉郡平野郷 (現在の大阪市平野区) に移り住み、ついに同所平野郷の泥堂町に寺院を創建して、了願寺と名付け、真言宗の道場を開いた。 それからいくらか歳月が流れ、時代は慶長一九年 (一六一四年) 寅の年に、思いがけない戦火 (大坂冬の陣) に見舞われ、残念なことにもろもろの建物がすべて灰燼に帰してしまった。 ちょうどこの頃、河内国の若江郡萱振村 (現在の大阪府八尾市内の一地域) の 恵光寺. は、同国の 久宝寺 (現在の大阪府八尾市内の一地域) の 顕証寺.
