Editorial Bent: Carrie Underwood w/ Vince Gill Performing How Great Thou Art
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/04/carrie-underwood-w-vince-gill-how-great.html
Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Carrie Underwood w/ Vince Gill Performing How Great Thou Art. I'm only a sometime country music listener, so when friends mention Trisha Yearwood and Carrie Underwood I'm not really sure which is which. My defense is that it's easy to become confused wandering around the woods of unfamiliar country. Now, however, I think I'll be able to keep these two performers straight. Carrie is the one who just showed how great she is. April 27, 2011 at 10:14 AM. The Best Documentary Ever Made.

Editorial Bent: Hummingbirds
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/07/hummingbirds.html
Saturday, July 9, 2011. My neighbors have a hummingbird nest in their maple tree. The nest is about the size of whatever ball might be between a golf ball and a tennis ball. If you know what that betweener ball might be, feel free to let me know, but I won't be looking for it myself. I just don't have the motivation. Here's one of the pics I took. You can see the heads and beaks of two baby hummingbirds sticking out of the nest. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. With everyone ...

Editorial Bent: Wonderful, Terrible Places of Beauty and Danger (Christmas)
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2012/12/for-my-friends-thought-for-christmas.html
Tuesday, December 25, 2012. Wonderful, Terrible Places of Beauty and Danger (Christmas). The only Christmas story I can write for now isn’t a story at all. It’s simply a feeling I want to share. A thought. An idea. It was simpler to be an animal or a forest back then. But the forests and oceans knew no love, their beauty could not be seen, and the wisdom they could teach could not be learned. Why are they dangerous? Can we play with them or eat them or rub them in our hair? When we cause pain, we hurt hi...

Editorial Bent: A Simple Stretch of Road
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/11/simple-stretch-of-road.html
Saturday, November 19, 2011. A Simple Stretch of Road. The place you call home changes with time. Old places grow older. New places appear. People change. This is one of the places that still feels true, that still seems to have the presence of time without the sense of time passing too quickly. In my memories, this spot looks like this photo. Trees. Street lights. A little snow today. A little rain yesterday. Perhaps a dry summer breeze tomorrow. But always the same place. South Main Street of Brigham C...

Editorial Bent: Does Man's Inhumanity to Man Really Mean There's No Benevolent God?
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/07/does-evil-negate-idea-of-benevolent-god.html
Monday, July 4, 2011. Does Man's Inhumanity to Man Really Mean There's No Benevolent God? This weekend on Facebook, I linked a video about Erick Lund, a young soldier who was "Swiss cheesed" by shrapnel in an IED attack that destroyed his vehicle. I understand the thought and I wish the world were better, but I think God expects us. To be the agents of change. Here's the video, followed by our brief discussion. Commenting on a statement in the video] "Would you please help me out of this burning humvee?

Editorial Bent: On Justice and Vengeance
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/05/serious-thought-on-vengeance.html
Sunday, May 1, 2011. On Justice and Vengeance. Tonight I watched the announcement that American special forces killed Osama bin Laden and recovered his body in an operation near the capital of Pakistan. I'm relieved that he has been removed from our presence. That's a good thing, but I don't feel like "celebrating" the event. I won't dance in a self-congratulatory orgy of slaked vengeance. Considering all that has transpired in war and battle since he cast aside his rights to the family of man, tonig...

Editorial Bent: The Wind Blows Where It Chooses
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-wind-blows-where-it-chooses.html
Saturday, January 5, 2013. The Wind Blows Where It Chooses. Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? This question asked of Nicodemus by Jesus is one that causes me to reflect on what I do know, what I don't know, and what I should know. Sometimes, we're really expected to have done the preparatory learning inherently necessary to the positions of responsibility we find ourselves in. When I answered yes, he continued, "Can I ask you a question? And this is the condemnation, that light i...

Editorial Bent: Now That's a Beautiful Can
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/04/now-thats-beautiful-can.html
Thursday, April 14, 2011. Now That's a Beautiful Can. Having spent all day writing letters and uploading resumes, I'll take refreshing inspiration in whatever form it happens to present itself. At this moment, I'm inspired by a beautifully packaged can. I gave up soda pop about five months ago because I finally accepted the truth that it isn't good for me. I've probably had less than two or three liters since Thanksgiving. Would it be OK if I got some soda? I asked, wheedlingly. Here's the Dale-is-a-litt...

Editorial Bent: Grateful for a Loving Friend
http://editorialbent.blogspot.com/2011/12/grateful-for-loving-friend.html
Sunday, December 4, 2011. Grateful for a Loving Friend. My wife and I have now been married for 24 years, and not once has Janet killed me in my sleep. I am grateful for her love despite my flaws, her patience with my mistakes, and her support when my tired hands hang down. God bless the gentle, beautiful woman who put her trust in me back then and has managed to accept with grace the consequences ever since. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
