Places of Interest at Kokawadera. Although it was unclear exactly when this magnificent gateway was built, an inscription of 1707 was found carved in one of the gargoyles at the top of the gate, which suggests it was probably built around that time. It is constructed entirely of the precious hardwood keyaki. Zelkova). There are two magnificent guardian deities Kongorikishi flanking each side of the entrance, which were carved from local katsura. That my parents and I visited was number nine, Nan'en-do. My first visit to Nanen-do that I remember was in March of last year (I might have walked through or by it in December of 2010, but I don't have any photos if I did), almost immediately following the March 11th disaster in north Japan.
