Protecting the safety of Hamilton neighbourhoods. For my family's sake. Do we have Safer Speed Areas? Crashes at speeds of more than 40km/h have a much higher risk of killing or injuring someone. A child or other pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling at 40km/h has a 40% chance of fatality. However, if a child or other pedestrian is hit by a vehicle travelling at 50km/h the risk of fatality increases to over 80%. The graph below shows the relationship of vehicle speed to pedestrian fatality.

In the 2011/12 financial year we introduced eight Safer Speed Areas in conjunction with the NZ Transport Agency and the Road Safety Trust as a national demonstration project. Overall the Safer Speed Areas have performed well, resulting in a reduction in either the volume of traffic and/or the speed of vehicles. Also as part of our monitoring we asked residents of those areas for their perceptions of the Safer Speed Area.
