Stories from the Sahara. Thursday, 23 February 2012. What is a refugee? One especially cold night when I decided to crawl up in my sleeping bag, my host-sisters started questioning the bag in itself. Why did I bring it when sleeping bags are ‘only’ used for mountaineering and remote cabin trips? Does it depend on time, wealth or the political situation? And perhaps more importantly, who has the right to give and to remove such titles? A Day in the Life. I think the best way to illustrate what a normal da...

Stories from the Sahara. Wednesday, 30 March 2011. Regarding the recent events of utmost global importance. Sometimes we have the feeling that the world is coming to an end while we sit here and sip on deadly sweet cups of tea. TV and news is not something we enjoy every day, and whenever we get a glimpse at BBC or CCN another country has been shattered by an earthquake or nuclear disaster, or. Here everything is normal, and people are oblivious to all that does not concern them directly. After barely co...

Stories from the Sahara. Sunday, 27 November 2011. The new security situation had almost stolen our hope of going on the excursions we first had taken for granted, such as the renown trip to faraway Dakhla with the beautiful sand dunes. But that was before today, when we finally saw light at the end of the tunnel we so desperately have refused to shut down. We might really (insh Allah - lets not forget the larger forces at play) go to Dakhla! A local female volunteer organization. We are a group of Norwe...

Stories from the Sahara. Saturday, 7 April 2012. We are going home soon. In 9 days we will sleep in our soft beds and smell the fresh air of Norway. Do housework for a man. Spend 45 minutes on the toilet. Drink 712 cups of tea. Things we have learned. Don't touch the Quran. Tampons is only for married women.

Stories from the Sahara. Saturday, 9 April 2011. After coming here, I have bought two melheffas. The remaining ten I have been given from various families I have stayed with, or at dinner visits to friend's houses. Most of them are luckily quite nice, but I must admit that I have one or two that I still haven't worn and have no intention of wearing. No names or colours mentioned. Fashion and taste aside; what is the significance of this piece of clothing? It is, in short, part of their cultural identity&...

Stories from the Sahara. Thursday, 29 March 2012. Teacher for 3 months? What is a place without its people? Now as our stay is coming to an end I am thinking more and more about the people and the place where we are. This is not a permanent home. Not for me, not for them. Still when I look around, this has really felt like a home the last few months. If it is just the people couldn't you then make a home out of anything? How different would this territory be if someone else lived here? The family in Isla...
