Sandy Moran's Sailor's Valentines include patterns and flowers made of various unusual seashells, as well as different types of corals, sea fans and sea urchins. The natural colors and detailed work are encased in quality, hand-made cases of cherry and tiger maple. Some of the valentines utilize round ivory scrimshaw centers, others have one of a kind oil paintings in the center and still others have delicate seashell center designs. The very first Sailor's Valentine Sandy Moran viewed changed her life. Then in the antiques business, Sandy was offered an eighteenth-century example of these romantic works of sea-shell art for resale, and was quite taken by the simple beauty of an object that spoke so elegantly of a lonely sailor's love. I made costumes for everyone, accept my "cool" kid Ethan. We had so much fun that even Ethan wants to join in now! I'm inspired to make a group cosplay for all 8 of us. I decided on the Alice in Wonderland Theme. I went to Tim Burton, of course, as a start but twisted it up a bit. He made an amazing Mad Hatter!

Celebrating the maritime folk art of seashell mosaics. Sailors’ Valentines were originally made by artisans in Barbados during the 1800’s as romantic tokens from the sea. They were purchased by homesick sailors as gifts for loved ones back home. Each intricate seashell Valentine was encased in an eight-sided hardwood box. Antique Sailors’ Valentines from the 1800s have sold at auction for as much as $20,000-$25,000.
