8212; Main Menu —. History of Saint Michael’s, Wollombi. The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of Australia’s oldest mainland Catholic churches. On 30th September 1840 the Reverend John Bede Polding, first Catholic Bishop of Sydney, laid the foundation stone on land bought for 5, near Cunneen’s Bridge on the Wollombi Brook. From 1843 services were held in the Gothic-style church, built of locally quarried sandstone. Church of Saint Michael the Archangel 2887 Wollombi Road, Wollombi NSW 2325.

8212; Main Menu —. Saint Michael’s Church Today. As it has been for nearly 175 years, the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is the place of Catholic worship in the heart of the Wollombi Valley. The local community, through fund-raising functions, donations and loans, raised $120,000 to purchase the church that was auctioned in 1991. The Friends of Saint Michael’s was formed to take charge of the preservation and restoration of the church, and to raise funds to clear the mortgage.

For many thousands of years an important meeting place for Aboriginal peoples, was settled by Europeans in the 1820s when the Great North Road. Went through Wollombi Village, which became the administrative centre for the district. It was not long before Wollombi was bypassed and it sat as a rural backwater for over a hundred years. Today the Wollombi community is vibrant and diverse. Rich in creative art. Can be found in the valley.
